1 edit | Considering what it does, it's not overpriced
Considering the cost of a PDA and video iPOD by themselves the iPhone is not 'overpriced'. My Treo700W which turned out to be a huge piece of poo that would never sync right was $600 and doesn't do 1/2 the cool stuff the iPhone is supposed to do.
If the iPhone just "works" like my other Apple products do I will be more than happy to fork over $600+ for it.
Meanwhile we heard the same skepticism over iPod and we now see how that worked out. -- There's only 10 types of people in this world. Those who understand binary, and those who don't. |

The iPod was/is not beholden to a third party network provider outside of Apple's control and Apple was able to keep most if not all of the content in-house. This thing is entirely dependent on Cingular to work correctly, and anyone who has a cell phone knows full well that they barely work at all.
This could very well turn into a case of too many eggs in one basket. It'll do a lot of things poorly and none well. Apple would have been much better off waiting for true 3G deployment nationwide and not limiting it to one carrier. It all smells of money changing hands and not Apple's famed "innovation". -- Toolmaster of La Grange. |

They stole the original point and click GUI from Xerox. They stole the mouse from Xerox. They packaged it all into a tiny machine with a tiny b&w screen and charged a fortune for it. BFD.
What was the innovation?
All it ever was with Apple was savvy packaging and marking to an all too stupid average consumer. Sheep. They are counting on those sheep to buy into another closed-ended, overpriced product with limited long term functionality... I MEAN IT'S A FRIGGIN' PHONE PEOPLE! You know, the one thing almost everyone gets a new one of in two years or less? You would have to be a total idiot to spend $500 on this thing. But I'm sure some of you will and then you can show it off to your other geeky friends who will go "ooh and ahh" and exclaim "golly gee!"... that is until the next flashy toy comes out in six months. By then the original iPhone buyers will be all pissed because their screens have a scratch and their battery won't hold enough of a charge so they can listen to their entire Brittany Spears hits collection anymore. A very sad state of affairs. Sheep.
Steve Jobs should put out some Apple branded water. It would save a lot on R&D and the thirsty Apple fanboys can feel warm and fuzzy inside and out. |

| While that debate could take up the rest of the storage available for this site, I'm talking more about the product being all about their deal with Cingular and money changing hands and not about "innovation", which is all the fangrrlz want to talk about.
My opinion of Apple's marketing tactics is pretty well known here. If they can continue to milk the loyal cows, good for them. But this "revolutionary!" pablum is getting really old. -- Toolmaster of La Grange. |

| XEROX (then, and since) was NOT a personal ANYTHING company, and neither was IBM. Both XEROX and IBM were primarily concerned with B2B relationships (the bigger the B they were dealing with, the better). In fact, both companies were notorious *since* for flubbing things that took anything remotely touchie-feelie (remember the early Xerox Document Station, the original fruits of the developments of PARC, and both the PS/2 and OS/2 in IBM's case?). Whatever Apple's faults have been, and they *have* had some monster flubs (anyone remember the Lisa? And the Newton?), Apple has by and large been great at touchie-feelie. The only company that has been their equal in the touchie-feelie area is a company from Redmond, Washington that has (until recently) been largely run by a dropout from Harvard University. |

Look at all the hype there is already...why? because we saw the damn thing! it's awesome!
$600? please, at one point they had iPods alone that cost that much and they were still flying off the shelves, thats not a problem.
I have T-mobile Dash--and i like it, but let's face it, the iPhone makes the Dash look like an Atari. same goes for all those other PDA/smartphones.
if the iPhone performs as advertised, then forgetaboutit. it's going to be the best selling phone ever...player haters you've been warned. |
