How is this Sprint's fault? Also Sprint has 10x better coverage than Verizon or AT&T.

??? Sprint's network is pretty darn small... most of their US network is comprised of roaming.

Maybe because Sprint continues to lose money and execs faster than anybody else in a booming industry. Their proposal may not have met minimum standards for an ongoing company.
Turnover in the executive offices has also been high. Three key leaders jumped ship last year: onetime chairman and former Nextel chief Tom Donahue, strategy man Tom Kelly and operations head Len Lauer.

Meanwhile, with its eroding customer base, falling long-distance and wholesale prices and weakening business services unit, Sprint managed to turn in four consecutive quarters of disappointing financial results last year.
quote:
Maybe they are losing too much money on those "UNLIMITED" data plans everyone loves so much.
In January, after losing 306,000 postpaid mobile phone subscribers in the fourth quarter, the company lowered guidance and said it would fire 5,000 workers.

Some article I read stated the official reason was Sprint's bid/price estimate was too high.

Unless officially subjugated as a 'going concern', Sprint's profit/loss statements shouldn't have any bearing on their selection. In fact, I'd suspect such consideration would give them an opening to challenge the decision.

Consider this Networx proposal was largely for maintenance of legacy systems. Sprint spun-off their legacy arm last year as Embarq. The other companies who are still in the running (met the down-select, note they did not actually win any contract yet) all still have their legacy components.

The REAL contracts to watch will those looking for vendors to implement wireless solutions for the government. If Sprint is not picked as a finalist in those contracts, then I'd worry about their longevity (and/or general competency).

I disagree. In all the areas I go to, both Sprint and Nextel have horrible coverage, and these places aren't even in the boonies. I switched to Verizon recently because the service in those areas are covered quite well by VZW.

Haha, that is not all Sprint's network.

That is Sprint's network + all their roaming providers!

The first map looks just like Sprint's own CDMA network coverage.

They need to bring back William Esrey. The company performed much better under his leadership.

Even if that map was the right one.. so? One can also say that this map is a population map. They have all the major population centers of the country. One could say they stay true and lean and provide service where it matters and not to the 1 horse towns.

When you look at the other's maps, you think the blobs of color equal a company owned tower? or one they have roaming agreements with as well where they include your available calling area?

At least Sprint doesn't cut you off for roaming too much like the others have. Cingular/american thieves & thugs, say one thing, mean another. Spring - upfront. So, if sprint is doing it wrong and loosing customers, then I'd rather be with the loosing ship. Just shows that most Americans don't care about the truth, rather, they want to be fed what they want to hear even if it's not true. For that reason alone, my attitude will never change.

:: sigh :: it depends on WHERE you are as well as anything else including the phone you use.

You can't compare Spring and Nextel as they are two different nets. Nextel is GOING to have "horrible" coverage on a nationwide scale.. they are and have always been for business and they have always served the major metro areas.. not the boonies.

To be fair, it can be said the same against VZ/ATT.. in Sacramento, downtown area, and first outter ring of the city, those two SUCK and Sprint/Nextel rock. It all depends on a few things..

I'm well aware of that. I have followed many threads at Howard forums and other sites to see what phone have had the best RF, and have used them. I've had old phones and new phones from Sprint, Nextel, and VZW, Verizon has been the only one that has worked well for me in all the metro areas I have been to.

You can't compare Spring and Nextel as they are two different nets.
I can compare any company I want, they all are cell phone providers.

Nextel is GOING to have "horrible" coverage on a nationwide scale.. they are and have always been for business and they have always served the major metro areas.. not the boonies.
What does Nextel being a business oriented company have to do with anything? Ever hear of Boost Mobile? Do you know who their primary target audience is? And yes, all have been compared in a larger metropolitan area, as I said in my post.

To be fair, it can be said the same against VZ/ATT.. in Sacramento, downtown area, and first outter ring of the city, those two SUCK and Sprint/Nextel rock. It all depends on a few things..
Which is what I said in my original post. But Sprints network is nowhere near as good as that person I replied to.

That link was from the same page
Covering roaming partners in a dotted green as 'unknown signal' only when zoomed down to the street level is a little deceptive.

Ok first of all that map posted above is not a Sprint coverage map. Second of all Cingular or Verizon doesn't get within 70 miles of where I am at and Sprint covers it all over. 3rd most of Cingular and Verizon's coverage are roaming. 4th Sprint's EVDO coverage is FAR superior. Also to the guy saying they don't serve the boonies. You couldn't be more wrong. I am in such a small town I haft to drive 25 miles to get to a grocery store and I haft to use satellite internet because nothing else is available. I have coverage from Sprint. Guess who doesn't come within 70 miles of me? Cingular and Verizon. Actually Verizon doesn't even come that close.
