The cities seem to feel like they are loosing money to satellite and this will help. (no fees) I think it will do very little. The high income neighborhoods that they intent to cherry pick already have cable,BB and DSL. Bringing in TV via the Bells will do little for the consumer nor even the Bells. They don't own the content.
In my opinion, the Bells will figure this out down the road. They are better off focusing on naked bandwidth, charging by the gig and letting others deal with the content hassle. That said, there is a danger ahead for the consumer. EXCLUSIVE CONTENT ....I can see the cables or the Bells buying the rights for the entire season of football. In response, the other buys the entire rights to Basketball. Now the consumer has to choose, or buy both. This whole thing could very well end up driving up costs for everyone and in the end, the consumer pays to play.
However, on the flip side....a cherry picker doesn't really have the market power or cash flow to play that game for awhile anyway. When this happens...and I think it will.... you will hear a big bang...it will be all the short sighted Bell folks over the past 10 years heads coming out of their a..... Fools are too late for TV. Go for the bandwidth..... skip content..... and others can serve the video. There are some real advantages to being a huge dumb pipe.
Regardless, lower prices for the consumer???? Please! -- Thermaltake 2000a/Asus P4C-e/p4 3.4/ocz3500 2x512/WD.2x200g/raptor2x74 raid 0/ATI 9600/APC sua 1500/Logitech z-680/ Samsung 213t LCD/MX 1000 |
