Most people are completely ignorant that much of cable's potential bandwidth is wasted by 80 or so analog channels. Once analog goes away, they will be able to give us 3 times as many channels, all in HD 1080i, and have plenty of bandwidth to spare.
The infrastructure itself is fine for now, it's just the ugly analog content that's making it all go to waste. |

| You're right, lots of bandwidth
Look at what's happening in Chicago, there will soon only be twenty analog channels. Recapturing that much bandwidth is the equivalent of going from a 500 MHz system to an 860 MHz system. IMHO AT&T will have to go to FTTP because of what will happen when popular networks and/or popular live events air at the same time. Cable will handle those situations the way they always have with linear cable and still have the option of switched video for even more capacity. |
