MX Records & Nameservers

I currently have my name servers directed to the server that handles email for the domain. I want to point the nameservers somewhere else without changing the MX records. Will switching the nameserver automatically change the MX servers?

I meant, will switching the nameservers automatically switch the MX records?

The nameservers are where the MX, A, CNAME, etc. records are stored. If you change nameservers you'll want to make sure the new one(s) have the appropriate records to avoid an interruption of services.

If you set up the NEW name servers with the same data as the old ones, there will be no problems when you switch. By way of example, this is what a MX record looks like...

domain.com. 14400 IN MX 5 mailserver.domain.com.

So if that record exists on your old server, just make sure it is over on the new server before you switch and your users will never know the difference!

Actually, what I would like to do, is have the website on one server and the MX records handled by another.

Re: MX Records & Nameservers

That is fine too. I have my name servers hosted in one place, and my website in another. Just make sure the 'new' name servers are set up to your liking before you go to your domain registrar and make the switch.
