In major urban markets in Canada, the telcos are in trouble as far as holding on their wireline customers goes. While companies like Bell and Telus are putting a few stakes in the ground, they are losing far more wirelines than gaining ADSL/VDSL/IPTV television customers. Bell, operating in Ontario and Quebec, notes it lost 525,000 phone lines last year; virtually all of these went to the three major cable companies. On the other hand, Bell's national satellite television added 93,000 customers on a base of 1.7 million -- and that includes whatever "TV over the phone lines" customers it has (and it's been a product since 2004).
The key thing is who is going to have the most cash flow from existing customers to pay for ongoing infrastructure improvements? For the next two or three years in Canada my money is firmly on cable. |
