Re: 8054 is Garbage

Don't throw it away or smash it. On some of these there is a bad capacitor that will make the power fluctuate and cause all of the problems you are describing. Mine was rebooting continuously and once I had a friend replace this part (about $3.00 for a much higher capacity part) it has work flawlessly. With this fix and the latest firmware I definitely have to say that this is the best consumer grade wireless router I've ever used.

URL to picture of the bad capacitor.

My girlfriend had this router at her house....
My recommendation is to just update to the newest firmware:
Version 1.67b44 (125 Mbps Update)

make sure you have the newest wireless drivers for your wireless card...and you should be good to go.

I've even used this router with Azureus maxing out the connection....
Even though it doesn't have QoS, webpages still loaded (although slower than normal, since my half my upload and my entire download speed was being used by azureus).

This router isn't the best, but I could definitely find worse.

@cgocable.net

I have a USR 8054 Turbo router.

Signal strength is crap all other the house, and the damn thing goes down all the time. Its not uncommon for me to be signing in and out of MSN on my laptop because the wireless keeps dying. I have tested this on all wireless devices in the house, getting a steady reliable and fast connection is impossible.

Whats the best bet to get this thing working properly? Are there some tried and true custom firmwares, or should I just sledge hammer this and get a better router?
