quote: Verizon's new Premium Technical Support offers affordable, expert help for problems with spyware, adware, viruses, Internet security, hardware issues, computer operating systems and other problems not typically covered by many Internet providers' standard support services...Among the computer components and peripherals supported by Verizon Premium Technical Support are routers, network cards, video cards, sound cards, CD/DVD reader-writer, hard drives, flash memory systems, printers, scanners, gaming consoles and firewalls. Operating systems and software supported by the service are Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows 98 and Windows Me. Mac operating systems are not supported by Verizon Premium Technical Support.
What ISP provides computer HW support for free (I'm not aware of any who even offer it at all at any price)? Hell, computer manufacturers who make the crap don't often support it for free outside the warranty period (eg Microsoft, Apple, Dell). Now people not too familiar with computers can get unlimited phone support for $120/yr covering virtually all of their PC HW and SW. If they call just a few times it's worth the company vs. pay per incident support where HW vendors point the finger at Microsoft and Microsoft points the fingers at the HW vendors.
I'm mean come on...they will even help you with your game consoles.
And people bitch that it's not free? Priced a per incident call to Apple after warranty expiration? Or Dell, or Microsoft?
Don't want it or need it...don't buy it. -- There's only 10 types of people in this world. Those who understand binary, and those who don't. |

LokerPremium join:2004-07-11 Fargo, ND 1 edit | I am expecting it to happen like this....call in because of a problem with your DSL service, the tech will say restart your modem and when that does not fix it they will try and up sell you to the $10 service tier so that they can trouble shoot your network even if you believe the problem to be with the modem. -- "While preceding your entrance with a grenade is a good tactic in Quake, it can lead to problems if attempted at work." -- C Hacking |

openbox9 join:2004-01-26 Alexandria, VA kudos:2 | reply to RideRed Agreed. People are missing the point that this is tech support above and beyond your Verizon DSL hardware. This concept is no different than paying $3.95/mth for lame wire protection plans. Paying for insurance/support in case something goes wrong. Personally, I'm skeptical as to the level of support that Verizon can provide for virtually endless hardware/software configurations....for only $10/mth. |

For $4/mo or what amounts to $50/yr they can't afford to send a tech out to your house even once every 2 years. They hope that like car insurance they have enough people not needed it to offset the few that do.
In the meantime it seems like a good deal to me. Some "normal" non-tech family can get 768/128 basic DSL and unlimited support for their hardware and software for $25/mo. -- There's only 10 types of people in this world. Those who understand binary, and those who don't. |

You say no to the plan and troubleshooting continues, to include a truck roll to your house if needed. If the problem is located at, or on Verizon's side of the CPE, then no harm, no foul, and it's fixed by Verizon. If however, the problem is found to be on your side of the CPE, then you're charged $60/hr or whatever a standard on-site tech support call costs for the visit and/or technical fix.
I can only imagine that Verizon (and other ISPs) is inundated with trouble calls that are outside of their scope. Verizon may, or may not have, assisted in the past. This is merely a means to add a revenue stream as well as reduce troubleshooting efforts for software/hardware that Verizon should have no responsibility for in the first place. |
