[XP Home] Confused about Root Certificate Update at Updates

After updating my computer I looked at the optional updates and saw a Root Certificate Update (last updated 3/1).

I have this entry in my EventViewer:

Event Type: Information
Event Source: crypt32
Event Category: None
Event ID: 2
Date: 1/6/2007
Time: 4:45:52 AM
User: N/A
Computer: xxxx
Description:
Successful auto update retrieval of third-party root list cab from:

For more information, see Help and Support Center at »go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

I was of the impression that Windows updated the root certificate on its own based on this Event ID. Do I still need to download the Root Certificate Update at Updates?

Thank you.

Sincerely, Libra

I don't use WU. So, I had to go to Comodo and download the Root Cert Update from Microsoft. (Comodo has the link). Do you have Comodo in the Trusted Root Certification Authorities? It's new so if you have it then you have the Root Cert update. I figured that because i have WU disabled that IE could not fetch the update although I wasn't sure that having WU disabled would stop IE from getting something like this so I waited for some time after I knew there was a Root Cert Update. IE never got it so I guess disabling WU disables IE's ability to get that. But, in your case, it should have been fetched automatically so see if you have Comodo in the Authorities list.

Thanks Mele. I just checked and I don't have Comodo in the Trusted Roots Certification Authority. I'll have to install it. I appreciate your help.

Sincerely, Libra

I had two root certificate updates from MU/WU since MS introduced EV(extended Validation)for IE7. If you are using IE7, then you need the RC update.
