[XP home] after windows update comp won't boot.

I downloaded the latest security patch, now windows hangs on the starting windows screen and never gets to the login screen. I tried booting in safe mode and last known good but neither worked. any other ideas?

Lots of odd problems with this update:

»Latest Windows update disables AVG antivirus

»[XP Pro] Windows Update last night, now won't boot.

This has worked for me in the past. If you have the OS cd put it in the drive like if your going to install windows, reboot, the disk is going to detect your windows and ask you if you would like to install a fresh copy or repair. it's going to look like it's installing a fresh copy but it's just repairing. After it's done windows should boot up. If you don't know how to do this i can dig up some notes i keep because i dont know it by memory and post step by step on how to do this, just let me know.

You could also try uninstalling KB925902 using the Recovery Console:

by the way if you have important files i suggest you back them up first. You can do this via a live cd and save to a big enough USB drive, by taking the drive out and putting it in another computer as slave and backing you data to that other computer. Again, just ask if you would like step by step instructions, but like i posted above if you have OS cd it should work fine if you just do a repair and not a fresh install.

The repair install didn't work, and I can't find my Windows license key. I'll just use my Ubuntu Live CD until I can get a new copy of WinXP.
