I had Verizon DSL for four years.

I never had to call tech support, except for the time when I wanted to upgrade for free to the 3000/768 service. At the time, for $25 more than VZ's 3000/768 service, the only other DSL in my area was 608/128, for $50/month, with a one year contract, or 4000/384 with high latency and random downtime through timewarner.

If I were to pay their stupid fee, I'd still be ridiculously ahead of other companies in the area.

Why bother paying for the extra tech support? If your experience is like mine, you won't need them. If it isn't and you need something calling them won't fix anything. ISP basic tech support never does, the people who have half a brain who help fix outages and overloaded routers and whatnot do, and you're not within miles of getting through to them through the ISP tech support. When you call ISP tech support, you get gems like "reboot your modem" and "restart your PC" and "replace the cat5 cable" - not anything meaningful.
