crash triggered by chkdsk?

I've had weird behavior on Vista since installing the patch, but maybe it is related to the flash card reader device driver. DEP is enabled on this machine for all apps.

Every time I schedule a chkdsk of the hard drive, then reboot, the following happens. First, the chkdsk runs with no problems. Then it reboots automatically, like it should.

Then, when it boots up I get a blue screen of death followed immediately by a reboot.

Can't figure it out. I think the media card reader device driver is installed right now. It doesn't matter if there is an SD card in there or not. Same thing. Weird.

Something changed. At this point, I think it's not related to the ANI patch. I'm posting this for the sake of completeness.

I had continued to use the computer as normal, except I wouldn't schedule any chkdsk--not that I do that very often. I shut it down last night. Today I turned it on. Vista went into chkdsk (apparently it detected it needed to on its own).

This time chkdsk found several errors, as per Event VIewer. After this chkdsk was performed, Vista booted normally. I guess sometimes you have to run chkdsk many times before it finally solves the problem. Elsewhere in Event Viewer, I have received notice of a disk controller error. I'm going to reinstall the "essential" drivers from HP, which apparently include chipset and disk controller drivers.

Brief follow-up for resolution to problem.

I continued to have many BSODs on this machine. I was getting 0x0000007f stop errors, which are usually blamed on hardware. Memory tests said the memory was fine. Eventually, Vista refused to install a Windows Update (not the ANI update). Soon, Vista got to the point where it wouldn't boot, even in safe mode. I ran DBAN, wiped the drive, and reinstalled Vista on a fresh partition, thinking I would get a BSOD. Instead, it has run great since the fresh install. I think I made two mistakes: first, I upgraded from XP to Vista without formatting the drive. Second, I removed Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable, which was in the list of installed programs. I later learned that it was installed as part of the ATI video driver. I thought it was related to some freeware junk I had tried out and gave me relatively minor problems. Install Vista fresh and keep the redistributable that ATI uses if you have that. Good luck.
