Re: [FireFox] Tweaking Firefox for Fun & Speed

great!
Just checking, so I won't have to make any additional changes.

If I change anything I will make a separate note but I am going to leave things as they are. Seems to be working well for everyone so far.

No problems here, but I honestly don't see significant improvement either.

Some sites seem slightly faster but at least one site seems slightly slower.

Are there some tests we can run before & after?

Thanks.

Yes, I would uninstall FasterFox.
I finally decided to remove it as well. Plus one of the settings is incorrect in the extension. Probably best to set it yourself just like above.

Oh thanks Grail Knight See Profile feel better.

You may not see anything at all.

If you want to test speed here are 2 sites.

You can always Google for more.

»review.zdnet.com/7004-7254_16-0.html

Remember you can play with the numbers to suit your needs just make sure you refer to the site below so you do not go outside of any of the parameters and adversely affect your speed.

is there a way to put this into stylish?

Stylish is for tweaking how a site looks.

Thses tweaks do not have anything to do with visual effects or .css.

Oops, my error. I apologize... something in FF must be hosed as my avatar is getting substituted for yours. Only when viewed in FF and not with IE. Sorry.

I have noticed a problem since applying these settings. I am not 100% sure it is because of the settings, but I think it is.

When I surf to my gateway's configuration screens, most of the command buttons are not shown as graphics. If I right click on them, they bring up a new screen with nothing but the correct graphic image in them, but if I go back to the screen where they are supposed to be displayed, they still are not displayed. In case this doesn't make sense, I am attaching some screen shots.

Make both of these false.

user_pref("network.http.pipelining", false);
user_pref("network.http.proxy.pipelining", false);

Also change the valse for this from 50 to 100

nglayout.initialpaint.delay

Restart Fx when done.

Some sites do not like pipelining and the initial paint layout may need more time to render a page depending on your connection. Try anything between 0 - 250 (250 is default)

Edit* Added info.

I disabled pipelining yesterday and the one site that seemed sluggish is better now. The others still seem about the same to me.

I tried that java test site you recommended, but couldn't get a resulting score after it ran all the tests. Instead it listed all the most recent scores dated July 2006 and my score wasn't on the list.

The other CNET site appeared to be another speed test that just measures bandwidth performance, similar to the one here.

Thanks.

Like I said the tweaks may or may not be noticeable.

Pipelining is hit or miss for some sites. The link I posted to Mozilla's Fx Tweak Site details what each tweak does explains why pipelining can have an adverse effect.

I test my connection once in a blue moon and judge my speed by what I see.

Edit* Corrected test.

Thanks, but its still not working. I made all the changes, including setting nglayout.initialpaint.delay to 250.

Now I am trying to edit these things, manually. I made a mistake and put in a new descriptor named "true". How do I get rid of it?

Never mind. I restarted Firefox and it disappeared all by itself. Probably because it is invalid.

Type about:config in the address bar and filter to those 3 settings and make sure the changes took. If not just double click the value and enter in the amount for the one.

Double-clicking the value in both pipelining will change it to false.
