Addiing Jpgs to PMs (AGAIN)

I know this feature used to exist, and I think it should be brought back.

The ability to add JPGs or Gifs or whatever to PMs....

unlike posts pm are not moderated, how do we know that whatever (jpg, gif exe) is linked is kept in line?

NEver thought about that, but I would HOPE that whoever utilizes it, would be adult enough to keep it decent.

Maybe it's NOT such a good idea afterall...

NEVER MIND.

What's the difference? People can (and do) send nasty, rude, curse filled PM's in text form and there's no one stopping or moderating them.

Anyway, I see nothing wrong with it. Anyone who sends something inappropriate can be blocked, just like with text PM's.

PM's annoy me. I would prefer the entire PM thing removed.

No one is forced to receive IMs as there is now a function to block them entirely, with the exception of system IMs. Should someone abuse the jpg format, as they often do verbally, that user can be blocked. When trying to provide help to users via IM the ability to send jpgs or gifs would be wonderful.

It would be a good feature to have, I've had instances where I wanted to show a user a pic and I'd either have to upload to my webspace or imageshack...

Abused too easily, especially since instant messages aren't moderated. Allowing members to either attach or embed images in instant messages would cause more trouble than it's worth. As a workaround you could always upload an image to »/dev/null and paste a link in the message.

Allowing folks to privately upload images in instant messages (or files masqueraded as images) would cause unnecessary overhead for the site.

Respectfully object.

I sign, I don't think there's anyone here ignorant enough to do that, there should be a "report" tag on it if it is bad so proper action can be taken. You could easily get emails with pictures so what's really the big deal.

Unwanted/improper images/files in IMs is one of the biggest reasons that "feature" was removed.

Post your images/files elsewhere, and link to them if necessary... better yet, e-mail them!

edited to add: folks have proven over and over again that they really are "ignorant enough to do that..."

PMs should be short and to the point. If you have an image, send me the link and I can decide for myself whether to look at it.

I've already had enough PM-wars to know that images (probably of buttocks or someone flipping the bird) will only inflame it further.

Little issue on a forum I used to admin.....

If images were allowed, a *crafty* person could insert a image from a server and just wait untill the person viewed the image...IP found, person located.

Not very safe eh ? It's a tool that can be used incorrectly if placed in the wrong hands.

Another issue is the old "hide the file in the strangely oversized .jpg" trick.
Warez monkeys used to use this method to trade/share files all the time.

Not exactly legally prudent eh ?
Someones getting a nasty email from a legal office.

Rammifications and implications.

Wow, I didn't even have to register to enlighten you'se.
