(I posted this as a comment at washpost, but I think it belongs here as well...and their comment feature strips anything that isn't alphanumeric!)
This is a good start. What's still needed is the telcos cannot just obtain a blanket "you give us permission to..." authorization (which is pretty much already in every customer agreement), but must request permission for each "partner" they want to give access to. The complete, legal name and contact info of each entity needs to be provided so consumers who are so inclined can check out the company before letting them have their info.
Something that would be really great is if a telco receives payment for access to any identifying customer data, 97% of the payment received must be distributed among every customer whose records are included (apply it as a credit to their accounts). We'd see them figure out ways to do all the stuff in-house and for a lot cheaper in a big hurry! |
