Union contracts will be honored; but jobs will be cut

I doubt that Fairpoint would go back on a promise to honor existing contracts with unions. But they will bargain tougher than Verizon when union contracts come up for renewal and they will run a leaner shop than Verizon. And that means some of the employees that come over from Verizon will be cut. After all, Verizon is getting out of those New England areas because they can't make a profit there with their higher cost structure. The only reason Fairpoint is taking over those areas is because they can make some money due to lower costs. And they won't let ex-Verizon employees drive up their costs.
