@fuse.net | Zoomtown Speed increased!
Finally a little bit of relief from Zoomtown. Looks like we were all bumped to about 4.5-5 megs recently. Very welcome news! |

@fuse.net | reply to dougm0 Bout time.
Video streams these days need that bandwidth. I download movies to my xbox 360 all the time through their service and the speed just wasnt there before. 5 Megs is better though.
Maybe cable will increase speeds again soon. |

1 edit | reply to dougm0 seems like they have according to their site
ZoomTown has multiple service offerings, all with speeds up to 5Mbps so you can choose the one that best suits your needs. View our pricing chart.

and you can click on the pricing chart to see it's 5/768. hopefully this will kick rr to upgrade like the rest of the country :P |

| reply to dougm0 ZT is upgrading to about half the speed of Road Runner. Now Road Runner is upgrading their speed around Hamilton County and surrounding areas. Some people report as much as 15Mbps download! Three times or more than ZT's "upgraded" speed. ZT is just so behind in upgrades it is really sad. That's why I left them last August. My area has not been upgraded yet by Road Runner, but I get about 7 Mbps down and 700 Kbps up. It's blazing on the download. -- Atheists swear there is no Heaven, but pray there isn't a Hell. |

1 edit | reply to dougm0 Sounds nice and all but I'm not seeing it. I'm still only getting barely over 1Mbps from ZT. They seem to have done jack squat to try and get better speeds to where I live. I'm going to have to give them a call. Last time I did was probably a couple years ago and they tried to help but couldn't get it to connect at any appreciable speed over what I'm getting now without having horrible packet loss. I'm not entirely sure if they tried to force a higher connection speed or if they just had my speed capped (which wouldn't make a lot of sense since the parent modem on the other end should automatically set the optimal speed).
I live almost 2.5 street miles from my CO (Rossmoyne CO). You'd think they would try and be a bit more competitive with the competition, but apparently they don't care all that much. All they'd have to do is put in repeaters to keep the speed up over the distance. |

| reply to jduffy I am now getting 1.5Mbps up and 9.75Mbps down with RR. This is great. You simply cannot imagine the download at this speed - incredible. You ZTers need to call TW. -- Atheists swear there is no Heaven, but pray there isn't a Hell. |

My business is on the west side of Cincinnati and my RR connection has been testing at 15+ for a month or so. Wouldn't hesitate to go to cable as opposed to CinBell. |

| Yesterday evening we came home to a dead phone line (no dial tone, just silence). Through process of elimination we narrowed the problem down to either the Demarc or further out the lines. Surprisingly Zoomtown still worked, albeit much slower than usual (was going about 400-500kbps). Called up CBT and they ran some tests that indicated there was a short along the route somewhere, possibly at our location (although we made sure it wasn't anything in our house). They set up an appointment to come out today around noon'ish.
Later in the evening the voice portion decided to start working again. However, there was mass amounts of static and scratchiness. Zoomtown speeds went up a bit (to around 600-650kbps). Fast forward to this morning and the line cleared up almost entirely. All that was left was some faint scratches here and there. Zoomtown speeds went back up to what we normally get (~1.07Mbps or so). CBT tech called and said they're not even going to come to our house because they already found the problem (and it was affecting a few houses). Turns out there was some old *LEAD* line still in the junction box at the end of the block that was shorting out. Said they even had a supervisor involved so this gets sorted out. They're going to run new wiring and fix it up.
Amazing! Just goes to show how unmaintained their infrastructure is. Only replace stuff when they're forced to. The guy did say our slowish Zoomtown speeds should be rectified when they get that old lead line out of there. I'm not holding my breath though. |

1 edit | My suspicions were correct. It didn't fix a damn thing. I don't know what they did (or didn't do) but it's no better than it was this morning. In fact Zoomtown is slower than it was this morning. I'm getting a steady 101k/sec (slightly over 800kbps) and can not get the Cisco to train any higher. The phone line still has a very faint random scratchy noise in it as well.
Time to give them another call
[edit]
Just got off the phone with line problem tech support. The lady was helpful and said the problem hasn't been completely fixed because they've been given until 8PM today to fix it all up. They only fixed it up enough in order for the line to remain useable so far. Guess we'll see how things turn out later. |

2 edits | Supposedly it's all been fixed up and there's no more line problems. Still the same, slow ZT speeds though. Just got off the phone with the ZT tech support and they can't do anything on their end to get the speeds faster. Right now I'm cruising at a little above 800kbps (just this morning I was at 1.07Mbps).
The rep didn't seem to know entirely what he was talking about though (go figure). For instance I asked about the fact that our 2nd phone line (which we canceled a long time ago) is still attached up to the pole and the breakout box up there. Now if they had to use a multiplexer because they didn't have enough pairs then it's possible it could be causing a certain kind of noise that would affect the ZT. The guy claims if there was noise I'd hear it on the phone. This simply isn't true since the DSL is using a completely different frequency spectrum over the line than the standard voice. I had also told him about the slower speeds I'm getting right now compared to what I was getting this morning. He says there could be too many neighbors around here currently using it. Uhh, this isn't cable buddy. Each DSL customer has a dedicated line to the CO/DSLAM. In the end it really just comes down to our distance from the CO (what I've thought all along). They're not going to do a damn thing to get better service to this area either like running fiber from the CO to a remote DSLAM that's much closer to us.
We've been putting up with this ever since we've had ZT, and we got it back when they first rolled it out many years ago. Personally I pretty much have had it with the slow speeds. I like to download stuff and often download large files. I'm tired of waiting. I'm a computer technician and every business and customer's location I've been to for onsites that have had ZT were all getting much higher speeds than I do here at home. Where I work in New Richmond we have ZT and we get the fastest speed possible. It really pisses me off. Of course I'm not paying the bill for the phone line and service. My dad has the final say in dropping it and getting something else. I doubt that he'll ever switch to Time Warner. We used to have TW cable nearly 20 years ago. They did something to piss him off and he had it removed. He's hated them ever since. Honestly, it can't be any worse than the stuff the phone company has done to him over the years because he's always throwing a fit about them.
[edit]
Back up to 1.07Mbps again after a reset of the Cisco, lol. |
