1 edit | This is why qwest is failing
They are too late, they think a small portion of bandwith 10 - 15MBPS per user is good enough? C'mon they are pushing IPTV + internet to a customer and that's all they get?
Comcast 16MBPS + Verizon 50MBPS + Cox 10MBPS +
everyone around them who they are competing against is giving faster and faster speeds and now qwest is just getting around to upgrading.
I also though Cherry Picking was illegal or just a really stupid move by alienating your customers? -- "Sure there have been injuries and deaths in boxing - but none of them serious." - Alan Minter, Boxer

That six, however, needs to double or triple. -- Toolmaster of La Grange. |

Right, but regardless if the user is signing up for IPTV, they still get 6meg. It's not like they can use the "unused" bandwidth for their internet portion.
At least that's how I understand it. -- YourIP.US - It's Your IP .. and more! rr.cx - Personal Site.. coming soon. |

They can't afford to ubiquitously deploy the same technology to the whole market. Nor should they have to. |

| reply to Rob In it's present incarnation, yes that's correct. But the IPTV bandwidth is not taken from the six megs dedicated to Internet access. Hopefully at some point they'll feel confident enough to (1) increase the Internet access allotment or (2) ditch the VDSL portion and run FTTH. It's a little early to predict what they'll do, and all eyes are still on Verizon's FiOS for guidance on how much consumer uptake there will be anyway.
ATT could do all Internet on these circuits. It's just a matter of setting the profile. That's not the point of it, though, so IPTV will continue to be front-and-center and Internet will continue to be the third child of the UVerse family. -- Toolmaster of La Grange. |

And which would alienate customers more- offering a service where they can expect some kind of ROI, or offering it to no one because they can't afford to lose money deploying a new serice in sparcely populated, unprofitable areas? |

| reply to Chiyo I work in the Qwest Community Developer group where we work with new single family home developments exclusively. Since we've started offering speeds higher than 1.5M about 3 years ago the take rate for our higher tier is less than 20%.
The majority of people in these new developments, the wealthy, as stated earlier don't have the need for more than that at this point. It's not as if our premiere tier is overpriced either at $34.99 per month. Obviously those of us on this forum are bandwidth happy and want as much as we can get our hands on, but don't be foolish enough to think that we're even close to being the majority.
Even at the FTTH deployment we have in Utah where customers 5M service is paid for as part of their HOA dues. We have a 10% take rate for the 10M which is $14.99 more a month. |
