Verizon will play catch up

Verizon should offer symmetric service. Others already are offering it, like Paxio in the western US. You can get 10M/10M for DSL and cable prices if you live in an area served by their FTTH. I have to say, the symmetric service really rocks. My VPN connection is great (but it will be even better when they finally upgrade the service where I work).
