So I'm assuming you're against owning a Nintendo Wii simply because it has a web browser so it's automatically labeled a "porn gateway"? Sorry little Timmy, no Mario for you!
People like that are the kind of parents that blame everything on others, and nothing on themselves. When a kid commits a crime it's societies fault. When he wins a baseball game, well, that's just good parenting.
Back on topic, porn is really an outlet for sexual urges. Those urges are going to come out whether you like it or not. When you condemn porn and masturbation to your kids, expect your bathroom to be occupied most of the day. Sucks on those day you're sick and have explosive diarrhea. BTW, most of the girls in my high school with very strict parents are the most sluttiest chicks I have ever seen. I'll take porn over a STD any day. Now that I think of it, I think all the porn I have watched over the years have helped develop my personality tremendously, old chap! If I had parents that even tried to stop anything I wanted to pursue, it's rebellion time! No, wait, all the porn is taking effect!...must....have...anonymous....sex! |

1 edit | Nice, but how does that affect Texas, where the story in the original post takes place? My point is, there is no giant, national "teacher's union". If one wants to refer to a specific organization, fine. I just wish people would stop using the phrase "the Teacher's Union". It doesn't exist. |

| reply to whocares I work in IT for a school district. It is federal law that schools filter web content, and we do our best to stay in compliance. If we cannot filter the web because of a hardware failure or something else, we will shut down ALL internet access until we can provide filtered content.
Everyone needs to remember that no internet filter is perfect, and that students, especially HS students, look for ways around these filters all the time, and we continue the block these other routes the best we can, as we find them. -- Hard work never killed anybody, but why should I take the chance. |

2 edits | reply to whocares I'm not sure what this mother expects the school officials to do short of disconnecting from the internet entirely. I don't think she understands that it's almost impossible to filter out every single word/phrase that *could*, in theory, lead to porn sites. Does she prefer the filtering to be so tight as to render it impossible for the kids to even use the computers for what they need them for?
Maybe she needs to be educated on how filtering works and what it's limitations are when computers are to be used in an educational environment.

There isn't. Stop talking about something in which you have no clue about. The only 'National' level union for 'Teachers' is the AFT. Also I would like to pose the question, why do they wanna look at porn at school? 1 edit | reply to Mchart quote: "there is no giant, national "teacher's union"
yea right,& there is no pilots union,or CWA, (communication Workers) union,or teamsters union,or thousands of other unions huh.
As Mchart said, there is the AFT (American Federation of Teachers) and the NEA (National Education Association). There are local associations that are affiliated with these organizations. There are MANY more local organizations that are NOT affiliated with these organizations (including the one I belong to). Most organizations exist to protect the teacher from a lawsuit crazy society and through any due process that the district or teacher might initiate. Public education is the responsibility of the States. Each state makes policy for local districts. Each local district makes decisions as to how to implement and abide by state policy. A national "teacher's union" doesn't make sense and simply wouldn't work. quote: Now we're changing subjects, but to CORRECT YOU,where the story in the original post takes place",never heard of Humble Texas?
See above. It wouldn't matter if it were Dog Fart, Texas. All Texas public schools are governed by TEA code. In fact, read it for yourself: »www.tasb.org/policy/pol/private/···INTERNET This is from the Humble ISD Policy Online site. Policy Online is used by most districts. It shows the TEA code in terms of "Legal" which is state-wide TEA policy and "Local", which is what the district is doing to comply. Here is what Humble ISD is doing to comply with TEA code. »www.tasb.org/policy/pol/private/···INTERNET |

1 edit | reply to Blackbird said by Blackbird :said by Pake :Do you think this way every time you see a movie? Watching the news? Learn about the recent Hollywood gossip? It's all exploitation to some degree or another. We exploit people every day, be it movie stars to singers to coworkers. All we're doing is going from sexual desire to entertainment desire or monetary desire. ... You clearly have no conception how the sex industry works in far too many situations and what the real consequences are for many, if not most, of the real-world, "ordinary" participants. Most of them never end up in the glamor of Hollywood or Playboy... or marrying some rich "John". A great many end up dying young, either from STDs, drugs, or violence - all too often associated with the ever worsening perversions and warpage they are pressed into. "Exploitation" is simply defined as taking unfair advantage. And many of the young people involved in the ugliest aspects of the business have not gotten into it with any accurate grasp of where it usually leads or what it always costs. They are truly being exploited, purely for the lucrative financial benefit of their handlers, controllers, pimps, producers, or whomever. And way too often, once in, there is little or no way out. Organized crime is frequently a big part of these scenes. Please seek out and talk to those in society who pick up the inevitable broken pieces: the counsellors, the law enforcement officials, the homicide detectives, the first-responders, the court officials, the emergency-room workers, the social workers, the bereaved families and friends - and the list goes on and on. I have had to help pick up some of those pieces... and it isn't pleasant. It tears your heart out. And it makes you very angry. Both at the sex-lords and at the customers. For some curious reason, we get more righteously incensed about the labor exploitation of teens in a 3rd world garment factory than we do about the same kind of young people (and 18+ is still young!) being literally sucked dry of their very lives in the exploitive sex industry - of which pornography is an integral part. You clearly think that most porn actors and actresses are doing this against their will and aren't making money over it. Obviously most of them never end up in Hollywood or Playboy, but to think they even assume that's a guarantee is ridiculous. A great number of them are druggies and STD infested, with violence following them. It is still personal choice in majority of those cases to end up in the situation.
Now based on your change much of what you meant by exploitation, explain how this exploitation is any different than some parent forcing their child into beauty pageants, or better yet, tell me how this is any different than your average company underpaying their employees? You're looking at this entire industry the same way, which is closer to strip joints to than actual porn industry. You might think getting naked for people is the same, but the porn industry has different standards than the strip joint industry.
By 18 yrs old, if someone doesn't have at least some idea of how the real world is, then their parents screwed up by overprotecting them from the outside world. You are right in some sense, we are more worried about labor exploitation in low income nations. Ironically though, it's a similar case of a mislead public thinking that all sweatshops are bad, when in 9 out of 11 countries, the average sweatshop pays equal to or exceeds the average income. The problem is once again how people are looking at it. In this case, the people compare it to our wages without understanding how far their money goes in their own country (Purchasing Power Parity). |
