I see something in there about "personal responsibility" of the user, IE, the STUDENTS. I see nothing that absolutely guarantees that students will never, ever stumble upon something objectionable.

believe me it is possible to block basically everything. the district where i work has gone on the overkill blocking sites. in the beginning it was just porn, gambling, now alot of legitimate classroom sites are being blocked. a class came into one of the computer labs last week and they were doing a projct on WWII and the filter blocked a site saying how hitler came to power. there wasnt any nazi propoganda or aryan nation stuff on this site. point being. solution is give no elem kids internet access. middle school students should have a highly restrive policy where they are not allowed many places and allow HS more places. tier the filtering |

She might force the school to waste time, but the fact is that she signed an agreement (apparently she didn't read it) which included a waiver plainly stating that the school uses filters but they can't control what is on the WWW, and they are not responsible for what a kid *might* stumble upon.
Common sense dictates that sometimes a word that has many meanings may give an objectionable response on occasion when used in a search engine. That is the trade off for having computers that are actually functional as learning tools.

A lot of parents could start with teaching their brats some decorum in posting in forums; supervised perhaps 
Why did I pay for Home Schooling, let me count the reasons!
School porn, hummm. What's going on that the internet can't be supervised in school? I can at home without much effort; let alone a 'Standing' Teacher in the same room!
I would digress a wee bit, because I think America is overly concerned with wrong issues. I'm reminded of the 15' fence around a 10sq' piece of dirt.
School violence appears to be completely acceptable as nort much is really done about that or the acceptable travesties of violence TV shows, News and radio language; but cover that breast up....Most from most other Countries laugh at this BS, measure your glass of acceptable evil.
But the real issue here is not porn but that very allusive thing that over time has been lost...Respect for others!
I have three girls and a boy, they turned out just fine; but not withstanding the kind of kids they had to deal with and some parents who should never have been parents. Then, the school and media. |

Regardless of what steps a school division (or public facility) takes to prevent the steps of viewing inappropriate or obscene material, there will always be a way around it.
We try to stay a few steps ahead of students (especially those in High School), however the more loops you implement into the schools, the less user friendly they are.
I will say one thing...our content filtering (Websense) does a pretty nice job at keeping the web sites blocked (although there are legal sites that get blocked as well) and it prevents the Moderate SafeSearch from being turned off on Google and other search engines. We've also got some other methods for throwing red flags up when there are students participating in games and may be doing other extracurricular activities. |

I don't believe filters are really the issue, in school these kids should be supervised and above all else I would suggest a new curriculum based on the old vestige of Respect. Since when are the kids becoming the control point on how things need to be managed, no matter the size of a class. Something has seriously been lost in terms of responsibility and I don't mean the net workers.
I'm sorry, but the bell tolled when common sense left the building. 'Freedom' is another word for understanding what that means! It's still not a porn issue in my eyes. Most developed Countries have free beaches and a lax attitude to sexuality, but are defined by their ability to manage maturity. Again there are greater issues at stake, as mentioned by Name Game . |
