| Motorola SB5100 not Powerboost compatable?
 Motorola SB5100 | | RCA DCM425 | |
Why would my Motorola SB5100 not be compatible with Powerboost?
I have been complaining for months and months here, on other Comcast forums and to the phone support and all pretty much said I should have Powerboost, just power cycle my modem to make sure I have the latest config file.
Well my constant complaints here on Broadband Reports finally caught the eye of a Comcast employee in my region. A tech was sent out and he was very thorough, eliminated my computer, my router, checked all signal levels, then replaced a bit of cable, every splitter, and F connector on my line. But even after all that and with his own laptop connected directly to my modem there was no Powerboost up or down.
His last step now that he had eliminated everything else was to replace the modem. He brought in an RCA DCM425, provisioned it and it was like someone flipped a switch, Powerboost was clearly evident in both directions.
The only explanation he had was my SB5100 was for some unknown reason not compatible with Powerboost. |

2 edits | That's strange. Many people in many areas are successfully using 5100's with PB up and down. Do you know which hardware and software versions are on your 5100? I have Software Version: SB5100-2.3.2.5-SCM01-NOSH Hardware Version: 3 MIB Version: II GUI Version: 1.0 VxWorks Version: 5.4 and it works fine with PB URL=http://www.speedtest.net] [/URL] »www.speedtest.net/result/113579197.png |

Only difference I see is mine is hardware version 1 and yours is version 3. |

I need to make sure my router isn't the issue.. |

No more believable than Comcast somehow screwing up the config file they sent this modem or sending the wrong one.
One would think a "bad" modem would not work at all or have other symptoms like massive packet loss, trouble getting block sync, frequent disconnects, consistently low or erratic speeds. But this modem has been solid as a rock for years beyond not getting Powerboost.

| reply to CableTool said by CableTool :Is it out of the realm of possibilty it was just a bad modem? I dont see how it is that unbelievable... Nope! It's very possible that it is unable to take an upgrade either from being a version 1 or some other reason, but have the most recent software, and able to get standard (non-PB) speeds, imples it took an upgrade/config file within the last year+. makes you wonder if they are pushing the right config for that modem on his local system. I do notice he's getting 2100+ on his upload, where most/all seattletacoma everett users (50 miles south) seem to peak at 1600 up. |

If you can talk a rep into unregistering your account and clearing your MAC and letting you go through the registration process again and I almost guarantee it will be fixed.
Getting a new modem would also fix the issue but then you'll never know if it was the modem or simple registration issue :P -- Forum Posts:7500 |

  agreed with q
@comcast.net
| Q i agree with you except that if the 5100 has been assigned a d10 config (docsis 1.0) and not a d11 config (docsis 1.1) then he wont get powerboost either.
I'm not a cable engineer, but from what i understand powerboost is negotiated with a 1.1 docsis registration, which requires the modem to have been served a docsis 1.1 config file.
In the end I agree, getting the mac removed, unregistered, and then re-entered will probably get it working. I REALLY doubt it's the modems hardware. |

Therefore any DOCSIS 1.1+ SHOULD be able to run PB.? (Make sense, CC isn't going to do anything outside the DOCSIS standards) So baring signal problem or actual modem defects, exact PB speeds, and availablity problems are likely account reg. problems and not something wrong within the plant? |

| said by tshirt :(Make sense, CC isn't going to do anything outside the DOCSIS standards) It is my understanding that PB is something that comcast cooked up in house and is proprietary...not necessarily something in the docsis specs.
It does have to be at least 1.1 though... so until the engineers that developed it come to this forum and explain it for all....we will all be guessing. |

The Powerboost feature is indeed implimented and controlled at the C.M.T.S. level. |

| reply to Kalvin00 Same problem here I have been struggling with getting powerboost for some time to work with my sb 5100 modem.
Software Version: SB5100-2.3.2.5-SCM01-NOSH Hardware Version: 3 MIB Version: II GUI Version: 1.0 VxWorks Version: 5.4
The odd thing is by luck once during a power cycle I got it to work for about a month or two until the next power cycle i did trying to see if I got the upload power boost as well since others in the area were reporting it. |
