Why would a Telco, heavily invested in FTTP (FIOS) buy a stake in a Cableco?

Re: verizon?

Well they have a lot of fiber laid in the ground but again this is a bit of a stretch. I believe they think right in that investing content is better then just buying some area.

Instant customer base (cash flow is priced right)

Bonus when the customer base doesn't significantly overlap.

Re: verizon?

Ameritech and Pacific Telesis once ventured into the cable business. The resulting financial drain set them up for buyout; and Southwestern Bell Telephone obliged them. SWBT dumped the cable enterprise to concentrate on the telco business: And called the resulting buyouts, "SBC".

AT&T once ventured into the cable business (ATTBI). The resulting financial drain set them up for buyout; and SBC obliged them. AT&T had already bailed on the cable enterprise by the time that SBC bought them, so SBC didn't have to dump the cable enterprise. But they did change the name of the company. Again. From SBC.

I would hazard a guess that Verizon will stick with what they know...They would be better off buying Qwest than TWC.

Why? Maybe it's time to think out side the limited glass tube.. First, let me say, that it's funny all this talk about Verizon and TWC... but.. TWC serves in many areas that Verizon doesn't. Being it's a stake...

but then again... I really doubt VZ would buy into a competitor.

Cheaper than competing, ATT CLEC owned what is now Comcast at one point in time.

AIUI, AT&T CLEC split off the cable part, which became Comcast. Unsure where ATTBI fit in that scheme of things.

Verizon is not a CLEC, though, but an ILEC; same as the old SBC, which is now the "new" AT&T.
