Isn't that why there are extensions?

Extensions don't extend the amount of time you have to pay. If you use an extension for that reason then you are going to pay some extra fines.

It isn't Turbo Tax as much as it was all the dummies waiting to file until the last few hours. They deserve what happens to them, if anything.

Simple: if you've overpaid (i.e., you're due a refund), you file as soon as you get all the requisite forms; if you've underpaid, you do the filling out of your taxes at any point between 01/30 and tax day, then file your forms on tax day. After all, why would you want to pay even one microsecond sooner than you had to?

The two things don't go together when filing your tax return. You can file your return anytime, either on paper or electronically, and then pay at the last minute.

The easiest way is to file electronically EARLY, but set an automatic transfer of the money from your account to the IRS for the last or next to last day. All electronic filing programs allow this.

You can also file your return early on paper, and then mail the separate voucher with your check at the last minute.

They will still have to pay, no matter what. They could still "file" their taxes, print out the payment slip (I forgot form number), and wait to mail that until the 15th.

I challenge anyone out there that could point out any investment vehicle that would make it worth it waiting UNTIL THE VERY LAST DAY (as opposed to 24 or 48 hrs before deadline)to file. If you found a stock or a bond or a mutual fund THAT GOOD where you're loosing more than 0.000001 cent by not filing at the last moment, please do let me know!

There are plenty of people that have computers and use Turbo Tax that haven't a freaking clue. Perfect examples are the ones that pay for the quick or accelerated refund options (which is just a step away from those "payday loans" places).

For many, "it's the principal" of giving up the money before you absolutely have to.

Because if you file during the flood, you are less likely to get audited (says an Enrolled Agent I know).

Sorry, but computers select audit candidates and that is months after the filing date. Filing at the last minute with the other procrastinators doesn't improve your chances of not being audited.

I'm gonna go with Carter on this one, a CPA I know suggests filing not quite in the flood, but at least waiting until mid-March, so that the flow gets a little more volume.

One of my brokerages sent me a corrected tax form just two weeks ago. I'm so used to getting last minute corrections from various places, I've learned my lesson and always wait until the week before to prepare my returns.

Or do your taxes, write the check and don't mail it until the last day!

Absolutely. But when due to abiding by this principle, to the extreme, you risk hurting your bottom line, I don't believe it's a smart thing to do.
