There have been posts expressing concern about the moderation of this forum I don't intend to discuss those here, because like you, I'm not allowed to discuss moderator actions in the forum.
BUT I am going to post a few words about why and how the forums are moderated.
Moderation is done to ensure that this is an informative place without flamefests or jabbing between members and that illegal activity is not promoted. There are a few other site rules and individual forum rules.
Some moderators take a very active part in their forums, while others are very detached from their forums. There is no site requirement that a moderator be detached from his forum, nor is there any requirement that a moderator take a neutral stand on any discussions. The only requirement is that the moderator not use his moderatorial powers to limit discussion within the rules of the site and forum.
I generally allow fairly free rein in this forum, except when posts start trolling, flaming or as recently, potshots at others that would result in an escalation of retaliatory potshots. These might not be flamefests, but they do detract horribly from the usefulness of the forum.
Mods in general don't deliberately try to change the tone or balance of posting as long as the rules are being obeyed. If that means that the forum or thread contains an imbalance of negative or postive posts, then that's the way the users have posted.
One thing that can happen is that posts that are anti the current sentiment in a thread which *don't obey the rules* are going to be moderated. This may give the impression of biased moderation. The important thing to remember is to obey the rules and your posts will remain whatever the mod's personal opinion.
If you have an issue with moderation, as a member, you can contact the mod and he will consider your comments or refer them to other mods if appropriate. The mods are unpaid, but have been carefully selected by other mods so they do rely on each other for advice in many situations.
An interesting situation does arise if you're an anonymous poster who has had a post moderated: all you're going to see is that the post was moderated. You won't see the reason that comes with the hey mod, and you won't have the opportunity to contact the moderator about it, and since any posts about mod actions are going to be automatically removed from the forum, you're not even going to see that either. This is one important consideration when considering anonymous posting.
If you have any questions about these comments, members can contact me or TigerLord OFFLINE by IM or email through the forum. Any comments about this topic in the forum will be removed. |
