for such an important service, blackberry seems to have more than its share of outages and problems.

who the hell is running this outfit?

Blackberry is the device. RIM (Research In Motion) is who had the meltdown. Even though the Voice network side of the actual provider (Verizon, AlTel, T-Mobile, Cingular, Sprint, etc.) was still up and running. RIM processes the data side.
