Thanks that was a good read. It amazes me how these things get started and how successful/complex they become. |

| I feel sorry for the UPS guy for having to deliver it at that place.
Anyways, throwing packages is not a big deal, I don't even know why he posted the video at all. You should see fedex/UPS make deliveries to big companies, they just throw it into plastic bins the items from like 10 feet away where i work. Never had a problem. |

Well, thats possible. I was referring to their Ground service, I have no idea how Air or International works. I guess we'll agree to disagree. |

| reply to MightyPez And I currently work for UPS. There is automated sorting. I know for a fact the Maple Grove, MN plant has been in operation for at least 3 years and has a completely automated sort. Unloaders and loaders, that's it. No sorters whatsoever? Small sort? Primary sort? That's odd. How big is that hub? The one I worked at was the 2nd largest in the nation. The largest is in Chicago, I think. Unloaders -> primary sorters -> a) P.D. destinations or b) small sort. P.D. -> loaders. Small sorters put the stuff in bags then they also send it to P.D.'s. I'm not saying I don't believe you guys, there just wasn't any of this automated sorting crap where I worked.
Sorry for the double post. |

| I work for FedEx Express and I've yet to throw a package like that, especially at a customers door. This UPS guy is a moron. If the front door was no accessible he could have tried a side door or the garage. That said, in 3 years, I have only had to take a package back to the station twice because of dogs in the yard (no fence and no leash).
I will never call a customer (the number is usually on the package) using my personal phone. However, I almost always immediately send a message to dispatch letting them know I couldn't deliver and why along with the phone number. Dispatch always calls within minutes and let's me know what the situation is, IE if they left a message or customer will wait outside, etc...
Am I a perfect courier? I can honestly say no... no matter what I do someone is always upset. If I leave the package someone gets pissed. Ok, so I don't leave the next package... then that person gets pissed cause I didn't leave it. Some people WANT their packages left others DONT. How are we supposed to know?
All in all, I try to do the best job that I can and be aware of what's going on. There are some neighborhoods and stops that I feel comfortable leaving stuff at and others that I don't. I try to do the best that I can and treat everyones package as if it were my own. |

Exactly, the only way that package would have been damaged is if it wasn't packed properly in the first place. He shouldn't have tossed it like that, but the reality is it's probably be subjected to worse in the normal handling of the package. -- Revolution!!!... or some such nonsense. |

| reply to CapinPete I also feel that establishing a relationship with your carrier is important. I rely on the services of the major carriers on a daily basis. I am on a first name basis with my regular delivery drivers. They both know where a package should be left in case I am not available. Here is one thing I don't understand: Why doesn't UPS have a signature waiver authorization? FedEx does! There are times that I am not at home but it is imperative that the package be left at my door, especially a package that is marked signature required. It is a hassle for me to have to drive to the hub to pick up the package that evening.
So the point I am making here is if the carrier has a good relationship with the customer, instances like the OP pointed out could be avoided. |

If a package is marked Signature Required, FedEx will not leave it, not matter how many signature releases you have on file. Most packages are sent signature required for good reason. Some items that come to mind right away are firearms and alcohol.
And lets say that there a rubber duck in the box and the shipper wanted a signature. This is a perfect example where the recipient would be pissed off at the courier when they should be pissed off at the shipper for requesting a signature. |

| reply to IllIlIlllIll With all of this surveillance cameras mounted, I'm pretty sure the UPS guy didn't want to step foot any more closer then he did. The resident is probably a skizo and had signs saying, will shoot all who steps foot, etc, etc, etc.
Theres probably a junkyard dog around too seeing all the mess in the front. Must be "one of those" homes on the block. |

This is a perfect example where the recipient would be pissed off at the courier when they should be pissed off at the shipper for requesting a signature. At my new apartment complex (which might as well be a condo set), if you're not home, they have someone at the management office sign for the package. This is UPS I'm referring to. Which is funny, because at my old apartment complex (which was the least expensive in town), UPS said they couldn't leave it with the apartment manager due to "privacy violations". Mighty funny. My new complex even has a dual signature process: they sign for the package, then you sign acknowledging that you received it. That way if you don't get your package yet the office shows having signed for it it's on the office to produce it.
FedEx I'm not sure about at the new complex, but what I do know is for the old complex, I HATED FedEx and DHL with a passion. FedEx always screws up the delivery for apartments, no matter what I do. I was apartment E7, they delivered it to D7; They did that twice. $500 piece of equipment. Fortunately the residents had morals or I'd be out my merchandise, because the Tracking system showed they delivered to the right address. DHL just threw the package at my door like a newspaper; didn't even knock and I was home waiting. I just looked at the tracking one minute, it said on route. 6 minutes later it said delivered, I'm like huh? Look outside and it's thrown on my porch.
If I had to pick a preference it would be USPS Express mail, since my new complex has that package storage process that the post office has where they leave you a key to a locker with your package in it. |

| reply to IllIlIlllIll Just another day for UPS
I remember they threw 2GB ram from the front of my house to the back a good 75ft. Of course since Crucial always packs there products correctly the RAM was just fine.
But I told the UPS driver to NEVER throw my packages like that again. I just told him to throw them at the front door and if their heavy, to just leave them at the station because I will go and get them automatically. -- The only limits we have are the one's we set ourselves. |

It's all automated. That's why the newer hubs have a high turnover rate, very little room for advancement beyond stacking boxes.
As far as I know they are not retrofitting old hubs with new equipment. It's primarily new hubs being built that get this. |
