JBahr69 : The Facts -

Automation - It depends on what hub you are in and in what part of the country. The two largest hubs I know for a fact have automation and use it very efficiently. Chicago has one, Chicago Area Consolidation Hub or CACH, is located off highway 294. CACH sorts around 1.5 million ground packages a day. The other hub is in Louisville, Kentucky. Louisville, or SDF, is UPS's largest airhub. On an average night, they sort around 650,000 Next Day Air, 2 Day, and 3 Day Select. They see around 100 aircraft a day to ship it out all over the world.

Package Handling - UPS teaches hand to surface methods to ALL employees. Obviously you see in the video that this is not happening. UPS realizes this is a huge problem with the amount of money they pay in damaged packages. Right now UPS is starting a massive campaign to reduced the number of damaged packages and begin to care more about the quality of work.

Discipline - It might be hard to discipline this driver because the name of the town is not given, nor the address of the package being delivered. FedEx always screws up the delivery for apartments, no matter what I do. I was apartment E7, they delivered it to D7; They did that twice. $500 piece of equipment. Fortunately the residents had morals or I'd be out my merchandise, because the Tracking system showed they delivered to the right address. DHL just threw the package at my door like a newspaper; didn't even knock and I was home waiting. I just looked at the tracking one minute, it said on route. 6 minutes later it said delivered, I'm like huh? Look outside and it's thrown on my porch.

If I had to pick a preference it would be USPS Express mail, since my new complex has that package storage process that the post office has where they leave you a key to a locker with your package in it.

This UPS guy is a moron. If the front door was no accessible he could have tried a side door or the garage. That said, in 3 years, I have only had to take a package back to the station twice because of dogs in the yard (no fence and no leash).

I will never call a customer (the number is usually on the package) using my personal phone. However, I almost always immediately send a message to dispatch letting them know I couldn't deliver and why along with the phone number. Dispatch always calls within minutes and let's me know what the situation is, IE if they left a message or customer will wait outside, etc...

Am I a perfect courier? I can honestly say no... no matter what I do someone is always upset. If I leave the package someone gets pissed. Ok, so I don't leave the next package... then that person gets pissed cause I didn't leave it. Some people WANT their packages left others DONT. How are we supposed to know?

All in all, I try to do the best job that I can and be aware of what's going on. There are some neighborhoods and stops that I feel comfortable leaving stuff at and others that I don't. I try to do the best that I can and treat everyones package as if it were my own.
