| Caller ID Issues with DSL Modem/Filters
Hey guys,
I've been with TekSavvy for several days now and am thoroughly impressed with the service and support. However, I'm having a bit of a problem with the caller ID on my home phone line. Ever since I got DSL the caller ID has been very sporadic, working in maybe 1 out of every 5 calls.
All the lines in my house are filtered, and most of the phones are Panasonic (if that makes a difference). I do have a security system but I called the guys at ADT and they said there's no need to get a filter installed on it.
Anyone have any suggestions on what I might be able to try? Thanks! |

| I haven't called the phone company yet, but I guess that's the next thing on my to-do list. How would I go about getting a POTS splitter installed? Is it done through the phone company or do I need to hire someone myself? (Or could I even do it myself? I've never worked with phone wiring before.) |

| It's pretty straight forward installing a POTs splitter:
Essentially you match the red wire and the green wire to the coloured spots on the POTs splitter, line in is the incoming live line, phone is the house, and DSL is well, yah, I am not going there. The ones we sell have 3 total spots, other manufacturer's have other inputs/outputs so it might be worthwhile to find someone who isn't too hesitant around wiring.
If you need help installing it once you've got one just send me an IM I can walk you through it, the one thing to remember, once the splitter is installed, is that there will now be a jack that's dedicated for DSL.

| Okay, that seems pretty straightforward. I'll see if I can do it myself.
Which POTS splitter do you guys sell, and what is it priced at? Also, just for clarification, this thing gets installed into the little green Bell box that's sticking to the outside wall of my house, right? |

| reply to TSI Rick I just looked in my basement and discovered this green thing. If I had to guess, I'd say that this is where the single line from the outside comes in and gets split to the various jacks in the house. Would it be ideal to set up the splitter here? |

| i had one of those wall mount dsl/phone splitters from bell and so this is waht i did.
i found the outside phone line in my basement, i installed that into a phone socket, then i placed the wall filter on that.
i plug the phone side into the alarm system (which then goes to the phones to the rest of the house), and i connect the dsl side to the second pair of the telephone line that goes to the room with my dsl modem.
now i have a split dsl/phone line right from the source! no need for phone filters anywhere else!
sorry if my explanation wasnt clear |

| No, your post was very helpful! My DSL modem is sitting in the same room that I will be putting the splitter in, so I'm just going to run a telephone cable from the splitter to the modem.
I think that because I have a security system, it's even easier. In the picture I posted above there are two pairs of wires that are spliced together. I just have to un-splice them, connect the incoming end to the "LINE" socket of the splitter and connect the security system end to the "VOICE" socket. This is easier than I thought it would be. |

1 edit | reply to andrewhaji Well, the splitter arrived this afternoon and I got it installed within about 30 minutes. My caller ID issues are fixed, and I don't need to use filters on every jack anymore! |

| reply to andrewhaji The splitter was $25 plus shipping and taxes.
Basically what it does is it separates the DSL signal from the voice signal, right at the point where the telephone wires come into the house. The DSL signal goes straight to the DSL modem, and the voice signal goes to the phone jacks around your house. It's not a filter, since it doesn't filter anything; it just splits the DSL and voice signals and directs them to the appropriate place. |

Do these actually remove the dial tone from going into the DSL modem? No, Essentially it's an easier version of the splitter setup you've established, as well, the POTs splitters tend to be a little more reliable |
