With seven years and five projects under its belt, Grid.org has successfully completed its mission: To evangelize the benefits (and demonstrate the viability and security) of large-scale Internet-based grid computing. Therefore, it is with great pride for all the accomplishments of this pioneering resource, and above all with the utmost gratitude to each of our members around the globe, that we announce Grid.org will be retiring on Friday, April 27, 2007.
We'll be making a public announcement on the site later this week, but we felt it was important to give you, our loyal member base, an early heads-up out of respect for the years of support you've given to Grid.org. This way you'll have time to gather final statistics, exchange contact info, and prepare for the official shutdown.
What exactly is happening:
At 12:00 noon Central Time on Friday, April 27, Grid.org will retire: Jobs will stop running, forums will be closed, and the website will be updated to reflect the retired status of this resource. We will leave the actual servers up for 1 week, so agent messages about this action can continue to be sent to members around the globe who might not check forums regularly. We will also leave the Stats up for one week so you have plenty of time to gather this data. After that, only the Home and Projects pages will remain, along with the instructions for uninstalling the agent ( »www.grid.org/help/faq_uninstalling_agent.htm ).
Why?
Grid.org has completed its established mission to prove the benefits and viability of Internet-based grid computing. Grid.org was the largest and most ambitious public interest grid venture ever attempted when it was conceived and thanks to Grid.org (and more specifically to all of you), today such a grid is no longer a novelty. Many public grids are now available, sponsored by large organizations better positioned to provide support to millions of member volunteers and the scientists who leverage their processing power. So, with the underlying technologies now well established globally in both public and private research programs, Grid.orgs goal of establishing the underlying technology has been achieved.
But what about
We realize that over the past few months, Grid.org has made several announcements about upgrades coming in anticipation of a couple of new projects that we were working on. While we were fairly optimistic about these projects being launched, they ultimately fell through for a number of reasons. We realize that many of you had looked forward to participating in a beta program ahead of launching these projects, and were sorry you wont have that opportunity.
Moving on: Where to go from here?
Its clear from your years of loyalty to Grid.org that Internet-based research projects of this kind are important to you
and so were sure many of you will take your valuable resources to other projects of this kind that are ready and willing to accept you as new members.
Below are just a few of the projects we encourage you to investigate: > World Community Grid ( »www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ ), operated by IBM > Distributed.net ( »www.distributed.net/ ), operated by distributed.net > Compute Against Cancer ( »www.computeagainstcancer.org/ ), operated by National Cancer Institute > Folding@Home ( »www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/folding/ ), operated by Stanford University > fightAIDS@Home ( »fightaidsathome.scripps.edu/ ), operated by Olson Lab at Scripps Research Institute > LHC@home ( »athome.web.cern.ch/athome/ ), operated by CERN > Distributed Folding ( »www.distributedfolding.org/ ), operated by a group of partners including Hogue Bioinformatics Research Lab, Mount Sinai Hospital, and University of Toronto > SETI@home ( »setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/ ), operated by University of California at Berkeley
Also, here are a few great sites to visit to learn more about these and other projects:
> »enterthegrid.com/ > »gridcafe.web.cern.ch/gridcafe/gr···ora.html > »www.ogf.org/ > »www.grid.org.il/
Uninstalling the agent
The agent will no longer be processing work after Friday at noon, so you will want to uninstall it from your home device. Heres how: »www.grid.org/help/faq_uninstalling_agent.htm . Some more explicit instructions, including Troubleshooting, will be posted online Friday when Grid.org actually retires.
Last but not least
As weve tried to emphasize not only in this announcement but throughout our years of operations, we are fully aware of the debt of gratitude we owe to all of you, our loyal members.
The excellent work Grid.org has done, both in contributing massive research power to critical health research and in establishing this kind of research as viable, would not have been possible without your faith, efforts, and donations of compute power and goodwill. There is no superlative high enough to describe the value we place on your ongoing support for Grid.org, and so we simply say Thank you, and we hope you feel as proud as we do of the work youve done.
Sincerely, The Grid.org Team

4 edits | reply to lilhurricane Well...this was certainly not an expected post to find today at the Grid.org site...
...and the hardest one I've ever had to make here...

I want you all to know that the Exec Board @ TDPH looked over some other cancer projects almost a year ago... We gathered info, ran a few programs..tested the waters..in the eventuality something of this nature might occur. We found a few possibly acceptable cancer projects.
You all have contributed soooo much, we all kept the faith..
Family stays together..in good times..and well..times like these. Those contributions to date did matter.
The research & results were counted.
For now..
I'm urging folks to stick with our TSC Project, while we..Team Discovery members - come to some hard decisions as to which way we should go now.
Wherever that discussion takes us..we'll go there together
Your opinions are valuable..and hang in there. We're going to find something that works...that brings us ever closer to our goals to find cures.
Facts and Figures
Grid.org was the largest and most ambitious public interest grid venture ever attempted, and thanks to Grid.org and its millions of members, dozens of similar global grid projects have been able to catch on and succeed by following in its footsteps.

But, we're still a team. We've been through this before and we just got stronger. I'm going to move 100% to TSC for now and start looking for some other great cancer fighting project. I've looked with others at some of the options and there are some good ones out there. I guess over the next few days, maybe weeks, we can all start discussing other projects out there and try to come to a consensus of what's best for our team. -- Stop Cancer! -- Our Hope |

jlhughPremium join:2001-09-07 Wichita Falls, TX 1 edit | reply to lilhurricane I never thought I would say this. I just un-installed UD on this computer. I have several more that I got to get stopped running it before Friday. That is the 2nd thing that sucks most about this move.
Now it's time to dust of the ole TSC and get back to work. I know a lot of you came here for cancer and hopefully we will be back on that in no time flat. But don't let the cycles go to waste. We will get through this. |

migPremium,MVM join:2000-10-26 Anytown, USA | reply to lilhurricane I know that I have not crunched on the UD project in quite some time now and there are probably several here that wish I would just go away.
However, if I can echo the comments made by UD, you all have done an amazing job and for a very worthwhile project. Please don't become to discouraged with this. This project and the others at UD can be considered stepping stones to the next worthy projects. And there are many of them out there, including the other project here, TSC.
It's always sad to see something end, but there will be new beginnings and I have no doubt that this team will be even stronger. |

| reply to lilhurricane It's always sad when a good project comes to an end, but I think it's so important to remember that Grid.org is ending because it was successful, and all the folks here are reason it was such a success. I know it's hard to switch everything over when you've been so loyal to a specific project, but TSC is also doing really good things.
Don't mourn the passing of grid.org...celebrate the good you've all done, and that we'll continue to do as a team. (and the best darn team in the world, IMHO. ) -- 4 cams, 5 cats, 7 days a week.=^..^= My Photo Gallery |

| reply to lilhurricane WOW! Did not think I would see this for a long time. Oh well I will do whatever the team does if its for a good cause. I ran UD for several years and was going to switch back after running TSC for awhile. Maybe a good cancer project will pop up soon. |

TD is really SO MUCH more than just a group of people focussed on this project (or any other one). As someone said earlier in this thread, we've been through this before and ultimately it turned out to be a Good Thing.

UD is what brought me to this family / team and for that I am forever grateful. That being said TSC is also a life giving project and I have embraced it fully. I have no doubt that as a family and team we will find another life saving project to work on if we choose to.
One thing this family has is spirit and unity. I personally believe that this will never change.
It has been an honor and a privilege to have been a part of the UD project for the past 5 years and I look forward to continuing to support any and all projects this family puts forth.

Cancer and UD is what brought me here. But, TSC is a great project. Additionally, it is multi-platform. So, I've got no issues switching my UD machines (all Windows based) over to TSC to join all my linux boxes. |

| reply to lilhurricane Wow. This certainly hit like a ton of bricks. Never could have expected it. I guess I'll begin the slow process of removing UD agents from my machines...
As for TSC, the reason why I never really got much into it is because the client was always wonky on me, especially on work machines. Has it improved? can it be ran in stealth mode, no icon, no feedback, etc? Does it support dual processors now? -- GOLF LEAFS GOLF! Thanks for pissing that one point away sometime this season... |
