| reply to lilhurricane A lil bit about TSC...from our FAQ:
»TD TSC FAQ {Archived} »TSC - Its founder speaks
quote: For those driven by the biological science we are putting a huge effort into the elucidation of the pathways underlying TSC and the identification of the best targets (see Rothberg Courage Awards, with labs now going at Harvard, Yale, Fox Chase).
For those driven by the computational chemistry, and physics we are going to sponsor a $1,000,000 prize. We also are unique in that we are sharing our results in real time to make sure everyone can use them, and updating our discoveries on the pathways as fast as we can post them. We are also exploiting the best in genomics, computational chemistry, and informatics, and have created the first non-profit "chemical genomics" institute.
In molecular biology, computer science, and chemistry we are looking for full time people to come join the institute, and part time help.
For those that care about cancer, and this is a big statement, we feel that the focus of this program on the BEST science will have potentially a huge direct impact on the understanding of cancer and cancer drugs. Both because TSC causes many pre-cancers in many different organs (and some cancers) and because we are following up and testing all the drugs we get both on TSC and on cancers.
So if you care about breast, brain, lung, pancreatic, kidney, blood, or other cancers you should know that all cancers, and there are more then 200, share a small set of underlying "mechanisms" that they use to kill you. Our work on TSC is designed to understand this fundamental basis, and cut through this noise that has prevented the war on cancer from ending successfully.
For those that care about TSC. I am privileged to have seen the light on the end of the tunnel that technologies coming out of the genomics revolution, the computing revolution, and the chemistry revolution can produce. With focus we will make a difference, as a team we will have the resources to solve this problem.
..and I'm sure this is dated..but the explanation on the premise of the project is the same. -- ~Safe Hex~ Team Discovery ~ Project Hope ~ Like A Hurricane~ |

I've had very good success running two instances of TSC on a dual processor machine by installing in different directories. I'm about to see if I can run three instances. You just can't let them all go into the start up directory because they will fight.
In all the time I've been running TSC I've only had it flake out on me once and installing over the old version fixed it without creating a new node so I must have had a corrupt file.
The only other issue I've ever seen is on my work machine where it sometimes doesn't want to release resources. I believe that is because my work box has a bad image of 2000 on it and doesn't have the HAL to support a HT enabled processor so TSC is hogging and the processor isn't able to do other things. I've never seen that behaviour on any of my other boxes though. -- Team Discovery |

| reply to lilhurricane Yeah, I will miss Crunching for UD...
But, I'm going to keep my 2 Crunchers on-line right up until the very end... (I'll still be at work when the deadline hits.)
I'm sure that any completed WU's that are processed right up until the very end won't be wasted.
I'll shut them down after I get back home, and do some Well-Deserved P.M. on them (Cleaning out the Ubiquitous "Dust Bunnies", etc. ), and start getting them ready for the transition over to TSC...

While this is a sad announcement in a way, the resolve of our team will not be diminished in the least. I'm sure that over next few weeks or even months, we as a team will look at other projects. I will be headed over to TSC with my machines, and will be happy to help test other projects as they are suggested. |

| reply to lilhurricane Grid.org has decided to discontinue their participation in the fight against cancer. Unfortunate but a fact of life. That will not lessen my devotion to doing what I can to help fight this disease. I joined a TEAM of like minded people that hate the thought of doing nothing while losing friends and loved ones to cancer. I still believe in my heart that we have helped and we all will continue to help find a cure for cancer.

| reply to lilhurricane UD was the reason I joined this team 5 years ago. Of all the applications that I have had to remove from my system, this was one that I never thought I would have to remove.
Our family should be very proud of the work that each of our machines has done over the years towards this project. Each WU sent to grid.org has helped in finding the cure for many different types of Cancer. While a total cure for Cancer was not found, the research and knowledge gained by this project will only benefit future projects from other organizations.
As others have said, there are other cancer projects out there that we can look at and come to an agreement as to which one we should run. Until that time, I will continue to be a proud member of Team Discovery by running TSC on all my machines.

Wow, Lil... I'm bummed. After not having UD agent running due to system (and personal) problems, I was just getting caught up on the stats and well, to say I'm shocked is both an understatement, yet not unexpected... I guess seeing the site taken down will hurt... mainly because the forums die with it... Quoting a well known band from IN, "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times..." Here's a hint.... Paradise Theater... Styx
Hope to still see ya and several others who wandered around here... I suppose I'd best capture the team stats as frankly "Team Discovery" totally owned this project!
Too bad the advance notice was so short... Kinda makes it really feel like a friend up and died!
Well best to all and I hope that either via the remnants here, or via related projects, I'll run into you guys again....
I'm officially bummed....
Guess my time to bitch at RCN is ending.... Many thanks to RCNDUDE and especially [siteshot] »i.dslr.net/avatars/889336.gif [/siteshot] Joe "jmirabella". Funny, my VOD is dead since the fiber break a week ago.... might be too late, RCN has "hit" the box three times. But on a long shot, what the heck, here's the MAC: never mind, dunno where the damned address is on these crappy DCT700 beginners' boxes... Perhaps UD's death is an RCN premonition?
Hey Lil' did you say just UD was going down? Now that I realize, that has nothing to do with DSLR! OOPS!
See what grief does to ones mind...

I'm sorry to see it end. That said, TSC needs our support. TSC is a childhood cancer, albeit genetic in nature, but any treatment or cure should have broad application for others. All these distributed computing projects will end at some point. Do what you can, when you can, as much as you can. The team is still here, it hasn't gone away.
