Here is an interesting photo journal of how the area looks today.

I'll try and find a link.

is a good video too. Thanks for posting this find. Here, also, is a game that takes place in the future after Chernobyl.
I'm not posting this to make light of what happened, but to in fact show a piece of art depicting what the future of the area might be like. The developers went very far to recreate the areas, even visiting the towns and the reactor itself. It's worth checking out, if you enjoy that sort of thing.

 | reply to against This is very good. The photos and the event haunt me. I have a friend who served in the Navy as a reactor operator and is now teaching classes for student operators. He described the event as "they generated too much power". That was an understatement. All the suffering by the families and workers is such a shame. I was an RSO (radiation safety officer) at a former employer. We used an x-ray diffractometer. I learned that the human body has the ability to absorb a certain amount of radiation over time and heal ok, and that's the thing. If you don't absorb too much at once, usually you'll be ok.
I hope never again. Thank you for such a great presentation. |

She lived southeast of Minsk, and the winds on those days following determined whether she lived or died. Her village was fine, but only several kilometers west of them was a village completely wiped out.
I've been fascinated by this event for as long as I can remember. The images of the site are unique and intriguing, but having this real lifeline to the event itself is a sobering reminder that real people suffered real tragedies in the wake of this terrible beauty we see. -- Laughter is the closest distance between two people. --Victor Borge "The opposite of war isn't peace, it's creation." |
