[Fiber Pics] North State Communications Lightstar Pics

After searching in vain for information about what technology is being used for my fiber service - and North State staying silent to my requests - I decided to do a little sleuthing on my own. All the pics are clickable ... sorry if I blow out margins and for the low-quality pics.

  • Here's the box where the individual fiber cables meet for my townhome "row" diagonal from my backyard.

  • The fiber comes up into the ONT on the right, and the sloping, downward-left curved conduit goes to the ONT to CAT-5e junction box pictured later for the connection to the CAT-5e wiring in my house.

  • Here is a picture of the ONT and APC battery backup unit. APC, good choice North State.

  • Here's a picture of the APC unit opened. Wonder why the red X status LED is lit?

  • Here's a picture of the Tellabs ONT611 with the outer "Customer Access" cover removed. ONT611 eh? We're in BPON country folks.

  • Here's a picture of the fiber coil.

  • Here's a picture of the circuit board and status LED's ... mmmm, tasty 100Mbps! That's the fiber coming out of the ground on the right, plugging into an SC jumper to the ONT guts, then twisted pair coming out for my POTS and data from the ONT to CAT-5e on the left.

  • Here's a picture of the ONT to CAT-5e junction box.

  • Here's the guts of the ONT to CAT-5e junction box. This is where the CAT-5e that exited the ONT meets the CAT-5e internal house wiring.

Where does the power cable from the APC unit run to?
Got any pics of that?

It's an outdoor weather shielded outlet that was installed by the builders of the house.

On your apc unit the red X is a battery with an x over it,probably meaning a bad battery or bad connection.

That's what I was thinking. I need to call them soon anyway because I think there was a billing error last month, so I'll mention it to them.

Thanks for the tip!

that splice looks like the work of a tech that worked on POTS lines only. Im sure it works fine, but it is very unorthodox.

Wow, those splices are horrible.. Do you get stable connections? I'd honestly take the time to re-do that application..
