Yeah it worked as long as I didn't want WPA security. Thats kinda important in today's world to keep away casual people. That and the fact that since we were mixing macs and PCs, that was the easiest security to set up that was common and easily configurable.

Speaking of security, you might want to use some wireless security yourself.
You asked what dangers you are facing by not using any wireless security...
If you ever log into your bank or have a stock account, or use a credit card to buy, someone can potentially sniff those packets and grab the stuff (it may or may not be encrypted). If you have anything shared, they can get in that way. If there's any windows exploits that haven't been patched (or if you dont update windows) they can use them to get into your systems because they are behind your router.
You also could open yourself up to potential lawsuits and criminal issues (RIAA/MPAA are the least of these) if you just leave your wireless wide open. At least use some sorta MAC control to keep out casual users. |

As regarding the MS routers, they worked and you could get them cheap. I installed one for a friend because it was only $5.00 after price matching and rebate. He only wanted it for NAT and the very ocassional wireless.
It worked okay for his needs. |

There is such a thing, so YOU apparently have no idea what you are talking about. MS dipped thier toes in the networking market for a couple years, and sold wireless routers, wireless USB, etc.
Its long since been discontinued (since 2004 I belive). And thier stuff kinda sucked (not nessasarily an unusual state of affairs). For instance, I had so much trouble recently trying to get WPA enabled on a spare 802.11b wireless USB from them, I gave up and got a free after rebate 802.11g one at compusa (I think it was dlink or some such).
Anyway, here's an example of what the routers look like:

Um, no, not exactly. I tried 2 different Belkin brand KVM switches in the past 2 wks and the both of them were pieces of shit. You couldn't pay me to take a truckload of them.
BTW, what exactly is considered a "Microsoft router"? Even the cheapest NAT works with another OS b/c the router doesn't care what your OS is. It's all about setting up the Samba shares correctly if using a distro of Linux/Unix.
You obviously think very highly of yourself if you're dinging someone else for having an opinion about a product you use, but at the same time, you have no idea what you're talking about if you think there is even such a thing as a "Microsoft router."

I take calls from people everyday. I have noticed that the Belkin equipment isn't as reliable. I get all sorts of issues with them. Everything from bad ethernet ports, to bad wifi transmitters. I have had people complain that their connection is intermittent, only to find their Belkin router keeps resetting on it's own, while the modem says up. I don't know if it is coincidence or not, but I know they seem to be more troublesome than most pieces of equipment. But I never wish malice on someone, so if your Belkin works, then wonderful. This is just MY experience. 
EDIT: Perfect example, today, get a call, customer is getting a 169.254 address, powercycled router, still getting it, bypassed the router, and got a public IP. So something was wrong with the router, but all the while he kept saying "Well I've never had a problem with it before.." The moral of the story, none, except if you use a router, call the manufacturer for assistance if you're gonna leave it connected.

I have the F5D7230-4 units. One as my wired primary router and 4 others in WDS bridged mode. On three of the wireless routers I have only a single PC each on them. On the downstairs fourth, I have a replayTV and an Xbox. On the upstairs wired router I have a replayTV, server PC and my main PC.
I stream replayTV video back and forth without a single stutter. I stream DVD5 movies from my server PC to my Xbox without a single stutter (I haven't tried a DVD 9 yet though).
I can stream at 18 Mbps from upstairs to downstairs, which is plenty for the above needs. I paid sub $20 a piece for them after price matches and rebates.
Bang for the buck? Yup. Flawless performance? Yup. No needing reboots? Yup. Am I more than pleased they way they've been working for the past 4 years? Yup.
I'd say pretty good routers. |

I disagree , as far as their 802.11b gear it was rock solid for me in 7 wireless installs.
They never had to be touched, sure they lacked a lot of power user features but they all went almost 6 years without even having to touch them. When G came with wpa I had to upgrade all 7 to linksys and they SUCKED , I had to reboot them every 3 to 4 weeks for the past 14 months.
Now I just loaded custom firmware and a script cron to reboot them every 3 weeks at mid nite.

I'd argue that, at least the cheap 2-port PS2 models with captive cables. They tend to freeze up (requiring both connected PCs to be powered off). Had several of them, both at home and work, with the same problem. At least they were cheap. |

I've got several Belkin products (mostly USB hubs) and they work fine. I don't own any Belkin routers, but several of my customers use them with no problem. So, saying that all Belkin products suck when you have never even owned any is... well... it sucks.
