Ive not been getting speeds beyond 6.5 Mbps any time I've tried, even resetting modem many times didn't help. I figured that Rogers hadn't upgraded here yet above the original 7Mbps upgrade.
I happened to go onto my router admin pages today and found that there were entries where I've assigned 3 IPs to people across the street (in 2 different houses some 100 and 150 feet away! (And I can't get a decent signal inside the house 60' away - go figure!)
So, I changed the router to WPA-PSK, rebooted the router and whammo 8035 Mbps from Cogeco! Strange thing was that the folks across the street weren't actually connected at the time. I can only assume that the router was working really hard trying to connect others that it stole too much router processor power to get above the 6.5 Mbps!
Were it not for the fact that I don't have enough wired connections in the house, I'd go so far as to turn off Wireless so the router can run flat out on routing and not fussing about the wireless!
So bottom line, not getting speeds you expect from these upgrades ... check your router! |

| It's not strange at all ...
1) Once you start pushing 7 Mbps all speedtests are going to start getting somewhat inaccurate unless they move more data. Flash based speedtests are often slower than Java based speedtests ... the overhead of flash often bogs it down a bit. Cogeco is Java, Speedtest.net is Flash.
2) Cogeco is peered through Torix (Toronto Internet Exchange) to Rogers. It's only a couple routers off Rogers network. You always take the same path to get there.
When you go to speedtest.net, you have no idea where the actual speedtest is hosted ... it could be anywhere and the route to it could take you anywhere. Often if the site isn't on a Torix member's network, you could end up taking routes to Chicago or Washington and back ... being the cheapest route. These routes can, depending on loading and cost vary by the hour! |

| Your theory is full of hot air. I never max out using Cogeco, but always reach slightly greater than 8000 on speedtest.net when I use the New York, Washington or Chicago sites. Strangely I dont max out either when I use the Toronto site, and I live just outside of TO. |

1 edit | Speedtest.net's Chicago & New York speedtests are identical to speakeasy. (Chicago & Newyork both point to speakeasy)
The Toronto server is hosted by UploadingIt who is hosted by Canaca..
I get accurate results to almost everywhere on the NA portion of speedtest.net. So if you're getting bad speeds do a trace to 66.49.200.80 (Toronto Server) to see whats going on behind the scenes.
When you go to speedtest.net, you have no idea where the actual speedtest is hosted ... it could be anywhere and the route to it could take you anywhere. From the ones I've checked out, what the location label says is where its located. -- Success is measured by effort. Discover Hamilton, and it's Entertainment. |

1 edit | Mr Cable, thank you for proving exactly what I was saying ... The Toronto speedtest.net site is crappy.
If you're not maxing out on Cogeco that's kind of odd.
I don't max out on Chicago or NY speakeasy test sites ... but come close. Rogers is strange but then it's flash.
MikeG ... uploadingit isn't on canaca ... it's hosted in dallas! (You know, I hadn't seen the "sponsored by" pane since it's only there during the actual transfer! So I really don't know where that toronto server actually is. |

| Uploadingit.com is hosted in dallas, but that is not the test site. The test site is located in Toronto and is hosted by Canaca.

Not one person in New Brunswick has confirmed an increase of speeds at this time. |

Wow, another speed increase. nice...
How fast can these modems go anyways? Any chance of getting faster upload speeds too? It would be useful for me so I can host better multiplayer games. |
