I get accurate results to almost everywhere on the NA portion of speedtest.net. So if you're getting bad speeds do a trace to 66.49.200.80 (Toronto Server) to see whats going on behind the scenes.

When you go to speedtest.net, you have no idea where the actual speedtest is hosted ... it could be anywhere and the route to it could take you anywhere.
From the ones I've checked out, what the location label says is where its located.

1) Once you start pushing 7 Mbps all speedtests are going to start getting somewhat inaccurate unless they move more data. Flash based speedtests are often slower than Java based speedtests ... the overhead of flash often bogs it down a bit. Cogeco is Java, Speedtest.net is Flash.

2) Cogeco is peered through Torix (Toronto Internet Exchange) to Rogers. It's only a couple routers off Rogers network. You always take the same path to get there.

Often if the site isn't on a Torix member's network, you could end up taking routes to Chicago or Washington and back ... being the cheapest route. So, I changed the router to WPA-PSK, rebooted the router and whammo 8035 Mbps from Cogeco! Strange thing was that the folks across the street weren't actually connected at the time. I can only assume that the router was working really hard trying to connect others that it stole too much router processor power to get above the 6.5 Mbps!

Were it not for the fact that I don't have enough wired connections in the house, I'd go so far as to turn off Wireless so the router can run flat out on routing and not fussing about the wireless!

I called Rogers tonight to ask about this speed increase, and why I wasn't seeing it. He had me remove my router from the equation. With my PC connected directly to the modem, I'm getting around 7.7mbps. So it looks like I do have the increase, as long as my router isn't being used.

I put the router back on, and my speeds are back down to around 5.5-6mbps.

It's a WRT54G using the DD-WRT v23 SP2 firmware. Anyone have any idea why it wouldn't give me the full speed? Anyone else using the same router with Extreme?

SOLUTION:

Bonehead move on my part. I had the QOS settings in the router config still set to the old max 6mpbs. I upped it to 8mbps and all is well now.

Funny, I had the impression that Rogers can't operate a network. Coincidentally, my modem connection has got a little unstable since the upgrades took place. Anyone else having problems in North Oshawa?



I'm wondering how much of an impact the deep packet inspection is causing havoc on the routers with the new speed increases. $20 says if they turn all of that junk off, everything would be fine.

They need to stop spending money on screwing the customers, and start supporting their infrastructure.

Not an off-topic post, a pointing out that a neighbour is much cheaper. 16/1 vs 18/1 for $70 vs $100.

Most people trying the 18/1 service on Rogers do not get that level of service on prime hours. Even on Rogers network. Same is true on a lot of other networks.

Part of the problem is Cable ISP's buy off areas so only they serve them. When you are in a DSL "dry" area, what competition do you have.

All but the largest of Cable/Internet providers do not packet shape.

Which newsgroup provider and which software are you using?

Edit: Also for those that aren't seeing the new speeds, have you actually powercycled (reset) your modem? Simply unplug the power to your modem for 30 seconds then plug it back in. If you have a router, you'll need to unplug the power to the modem AND router. Wait 30 seconds then plug the modem in FIRST. Wait until all the normal lights are on (minus a PC or Activity light), then plug your router in.

This is of course if the speeds have been upgraded in your area :)

I hadn't read properly ... I hadn't realized that they've bumped express too. I have to admit that I hope that the 2Mbps split between Express and Extreme is returned. As much as I like the increased upload speeds, I don't feel it's worth the price spread with only a 1Mbps download speed difference.

I was hitting 930 KB/s yesterday with no problems - my current speed test show between 6000 and 7500 Kbps, so I'm guessing my node is getting alot of usage today (I can usually max a speed test every time) - my usenet is now hovering between 0-250 KB/s... :(

Nothing seems to be wrong on my usenet providers end, so hopefully things pick up.

Edit: whatever it was, it must have been a temp glitch - I tried an http transfer from M$ and was getting 927 KB/s, then turned newsleecher back on to find the relativley steady speed you see in the picture. :D

Well, I did, and I've been noticing the speed seems to be higher than advertised; not that I'm complaining, mind you.

So I gave tech support a call, he checked my billing and modem profiles: they're both set to Express, but apparently the modem's been provisioned for 7Mbps and the upload has increased, too (I've been getting ~460kbps).

He said he'd been getting calls all morning about it. Anyone else notice this? Is this becoming official?
