What power supply connector should I look at to make sure I have enough power for an Nvidia 8800 series card? If you can please post a picture. Thanks. -- Bush bashing is old. How about more solutions instead? |

| I don't have the card yet. I am making sure my power supply can handle it along with my other peripherals. It's an AcePower 480Watt Power supply. I have a DVD drive a dvd recorder an X-fi audio card plus 3 fans for extras besides my mobo and CPU. The manual does say it has 2 6-pin pci express connectors. Is this what I need? -- Bush bashing is old. How about more solutions instead? |

You are stretching it with that powersupply. 'AcePower' is not exactly a good PSU company. So that 480Watt rating is more then likely a load of BS, the supply is probally around 400w on load. Will it work? Probably. Do I reccomend it? No. You want at least a 500w PSU when running an 8800, and thats if it's from a good manufacturer. |

| reply to jsouth That sounds like one of those cheap, no name supplies. Bad news for a modern computer. If you are investing in such a good video card, you should get a REAL supply.
Don't go by claimed wattage as much as by how many amps it can handle, total, of all of its' 12VDC rails. There are countless threads here on the other things to look for.
Current supplies of over 450 watts generally have at least 1 PCI-Express 6 pin power connector, but now some supplies are coming out with the new 8 pin connector, too. Some supplies support SLI or Crossfire. Just because a supply says it is crossfire approved doesn't mean it won't also support SLI, nVidia won't let products with other labels on them sell with their label too.
In order to know what to suggest to you, we need you to tell us all of the configuration of your computer, and any projected add ons. -- You know your life has gotten "DICEY" when it turns into an episode of LOST, like my ex wife, who I swear is one of "The Others"... !!!Save Lives: Join Team Discovery AND Team Helix, it is easy and painless to do!!! |

| See my 2nd post for my computer parts also the power supply is not a Cheap version. I know to look for a good power supply. This thing has some heft to it and is actually made by HEC.Like i said before this has 2 6-pin PCI Express connectors. Here is a link for the power supply: »www.hecgroupusa.com/product/32 -- Bush bashing is old. How about more solutions instead? |

But as I said - Yeah it will work. Use at your own risk however.. |

| reply to jsouth That is not a known, established brand supply, I agree with Mchart, if it is a 50 dollar unit that isn't good. You get what you pay for. It isn't only about how powerful one is, it is about how little ripple & electrical noise there is, how many protections there are the the circuitry, such as overload and short circuit. How stable are the rails (cheap supplies wander wildly which is BAD, inferior regulation). And plenty more.
Get a real supply, such as a Corsair. -- You know your life has gotten "DICEY" when it turns into an episode of LOST, like my ex wife, who I swear is one of "The Others"... !!!Save Lives: Join Team Discovery AND Team Helix, it is easy and painless to do!!! |

| reply to jsouth It sounds like you are looking at an 8800gtx.
Typically the 8800gtx requires 2 6 pin pci-express connectors. The 8800gts requires 1. Cards generally come with power cables which allows you to use TWO molex connectors for EACH pci-express connector. So, for an 8800gtx, you would need 2 pci-express or 4 molex or a combination of the two.
As to the power supply you can probably make due with that supply, but an 8800gtx is pushing it, as others have said.
If you want to give some other information about your setup, such as cpu and ram and what graphics card you are moving from, maybe there would be a better alternative. You don't generally need a gtx unless you are running at very high resolutions. |

| I have been looking at the GTS »evga.com/products/moreinfo.asp?p···amily=23
I can get this for a good price. I just need to know if my power supply can handle it and what connectors I need to use. I have a AMD 3800 X2 with 1 gig ram. I would be moving from a NVidia 6800 GS. -- Bush bashing is old. How about more solutions instead? |

| reply to jsouth Yes, your power supply should be able to handle that setup with an 8800gts.
You will need one 6 pin pci-express connector:

or 2 molex connectors using the power cable adapter shown here:
