Re: Is the Real.com browser extension a security risk?

I saw it originally listed in WinPatrol under IE Helpers, it just said - Real.com, Extension and the date it was installed. This is a new computer, so I guess Real player came preinstalled.

I checked with Hijackthis and found this:

O9 - Extra button: Real.com - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\Shdocvw.dll

Yes most likely it came with the new PC.. and if it is yours and you did not install realplayer.

If you have this in your hijack this log..

C:\Program Files\Real\RealPlayer\RealPlay.exe

Then it is install..

then things like this can be turned off..and real player would still work.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RealTray] C:\Program Files\Real\RealPlayer\RealPlay.exe SYSTEMBOOTHIDEPLAYER

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -

Best to do that in run>msconfig then on the start up tab taking the check mark out.

I do not consider any of it a security risk..just more of a PITA. Since real player does have a tendency when you start using it..to take over all your file types and associate them to be OPENED in real player.

Semi-OT

Uhm, Real has never taken over any file types here, although is has ASKED if it could... I denied it.

yup best thing to do..friend of mine installed realplayer one not too long ago..she was not meaning to do anything except use it to play some Church Services that changed over to streaming the real way ..but the next day seems even her gif's and all kind of other media now opened up in real player..I know what wrong buttons she pushed to make it all happen..but still was a pain to get many of them reassociated again like she was expecting..even some of her email attachments could not be views without the realpayer claiming it was the viewer of choice.

why it keeps on asking..usually is because one has not assigned it to be the default player..yet the user does have it installed...then some websites you visit have gone to bed with real..so you are nagged

Best thing to do with real is go into the options and preference with in the player..and change lots of settings.

But then as soon as you use it again just one time..stuff seems to get turned back on..

lots of competition out there.

Mine never asked again, only the one time when it was first installed.

Something else is happening I suspect.
RealPlayer is rather well behaved nowadays.

Maybe... update it?

I figure tekkies know how to deal with Real's behavior, non-tekkies don't.
I have a non-technical friend for whom Real Player seems to control all audio functions. He likes it and is happy with it though, so . . . . different strokes for different folks.

Click for full size

Mine is newer than what I just downloaded...
You better check that thread you linked to... and this Real Updater check.

No RealPlayer listed in that thread, and there is *NO* update... I have version 10.5!

EDIT: I have a version NEWER than the one I just downloaded from real.com!
