said by rodrod5 :why the USDA has become the catch all for all things "rural" is beyond me Think about who dwells out in the middle of nowhere. There are farmers. There are wealthy Hollywood types who own palatial rural getaways. And there's the occasional hermit.
The hermits don't want the utilities, and the wealthy don't deserve the subsidies. Who does that leave? |

| reply to Time4aNAP OK, troll, here's a brief and incomplete list: Farmers Bankers who loan the farmers money Teachers who teach the Bankers kids Dentists who fix the Teacher's teeth Grocers who sell the Dentists food Accountants who do the Grocers taxes
Etc, etc...
About the only thing missing (or less prevalent) in rural areas are smarmy asses who look down on people who don't live in their neighborhood... |

Interesting how the teachers only teach the bankers' kids etc., and yet they all get their wealth from the farmer. Quite telling, no?

| reply to Nuts I think the USDA should subsidize a sense of humor for those 'po folks' out there in the boonies.
But then again, I haven't met a country folk type that hasn't referred to me as a 'Mexican'. And Im from Chile! |

Yes, I know what "rural" means. My tongue-in-cheek reply to the question regarding the USDA's role in rural America was just that: tongue-in-cheek. There is no department of rural development, as there is HUD. Maybe it's time there is. I don't know. But until that time, the USDA is the closest thing. |

So stop posting such idiotic comments. Not all of us want to be in the cities crowded together, and some of us can't afford it. |

That was a Bush campaign promise - everyone would have affordable broadband available to them by the end of 2007.
