| I'm not saying anything good or bad about this player. I am going to relate my own experience--
I used to always update this installer, with the intention of one day installing it and checking it out. A couple of months ago, I finally did. I disliked it from jumpstreet. 'Gracenote' has the aroma of spyware about it, whether it actually is or not. I didn't like the interface at all either. It lasted a day or two before I uninstalled it, and I kept Gracenote blocked. I always figured I might like this player, but I didn't. Again, I'm not trying to sound like I'm trashing it-- I'm not. No doubt many people like it just fine. It does have some nice options, as I recall. It sure wasn't the player for me, though. But I'd give it another try if they'd lose the Gracenote. |

QMP is definitely not going to be my default player by any means ... But then again I haven't given full control to any specific software for "all media"... (yet)
And as for Gracenote per Wikipedia:
Gracenote is a private for-profit company which maintains and licenses an Internet-accessible database containing information about the contents of audio CDs. Computer software applications such as iTunes that are capable of playing CDs use Gracenote's CDDB or a competing service. Gracenote's database was originally created from and continues to receive voluntary contributions from users of this type of software. If music is not available in the company's database, the user is asked to input information such as the artist, album, and song name.
In addition to its CD track-identification system, Gracenote operates a digital file identification service which allows digital music files (such as MP3s) to be identified, and a media management service for the generation of playlists, and recommendation of music.
I believe besides iTunes, RealPlayer and many more use Gracenote (formerly CDDB). I know most of us don't like ANY of these "phone home" types of applications but I really can't imagine having to enter all this kind of information manually. -- Got a VAIO? Visit the Village: »www.vaiovillage.com |

I know most of us don't like ANY of these "phone home" types of applications . . . Maybe one of the reasons I don't have Real or iTunes installed, or use WMP either. I already know the name of the tune & artist on the CD. I don't need a "service" finding it for me on the web.
You're right-- with the exception of SUPER (which I keep blocked also), any software that wants to 'phone home' on use experiences a short life on my machine.
I guess I was just a little disappointed because I was expecting to like the player quite well, and I didn't like it at all. But as I said, that's just me, and I'm not trying to suggest anything, specifically, about the player. I don't put it in the category of spyware or crapware (like I would some others), it just isn't for me, and isn't a player I'd personally recommend. Others may think Gracenote provides a great service for them, however. |

salzanExperienced OptimistPremium join:2004-01-08 WA State | reply to steve1a I'm using an old version (4.51) with updated codecs and have no issues with it. I don't like the call home stuff either but Kerio deals with that quite nicely. I have the same version set up on my daughter's system and she also likes it. And I know she gives it way more of a workout than I ever will.
I stopped upgrading the player when they started to over-feature it (IMO). I only want a player to play music and video, I already have a coffee maker and toaster... |
