[Serious] My niece, four-year-old Emily Goff

Click for full size
This is a two-year-old picure of Emily Goff
The condition and symptoms of my niece, Emily Goff, aroused the suspicions of a very astute pediatric doctor who ordered a CT on Monday 30Apr07. The CT scan revealed a golf-ball-sized growth of unknown nature in her brain, cerebellum to be more specific.

Tuesday, the family consulted a neurosurgeon who ordered a MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging). The surgeon is of the opinion, based on his experience, that it is fluid filled and not tangled in the surrounding tissue. He thinks it shows a good likelihood of being benign. The surgeon cleared his schedule today for the removal of that growth with a surgery that could possibly last 18 hours. Surgery commenced at 0900 this morning and they isolated the growth at 1300 so the surgery has the possibility of being much shorter than anticipated. I am miles away from the facility at this time and have little knowledge of how things are progressing.

Kosair, the name of the medical facility, has an "Cheer Card" program on their web site: »www.nortonhealthcare.com/service···dex.aspx
Emily would love these cards.

Please pray for this little girl and her family!

Thank you very much!

Emily is going to either ICU or a recovery room.
The growth was cancerous, but one of the best kind, because the
surgeon feels that he was able to get all of it.

Will be keeping your family and your little niece in my thoughts and prayers.

I am glad that the surgeon feels that the whole growth is out, and hope that Emily will do very well going forward.

I am trying to send Emily one of those cards. Anyone else having trouble sending it? I time out and hang right after I select the type of card and hospital. Can't even get to the personal info... etc part.

Maybe I will try to send it later when it is not as busy.

A note from Emily's mother:

Emily just returned to the same room 417. The nurse said her first word was "no!" then I told her that the doctor fixed her head and she said, "oh,no he didn't!" She is heavily sedated, nubain, valium, baclofen, so she is asleep right now. So,there is no problem with her speech.

The tumor was juvenile polycystic astrocytoma fluid cyst little larger than golf ball size. The doctor said he thinks he got it all and he did not need to put in a shunt. This was the best type of tumor and you can look it up on webmd gave better info than the nurse gave me. A 10 year survival for children with her type of tumor is 90% with total tumor removal like Emily, and usually do not require any further chemo or radiation. If you all know, Emily had 2 symptoms; headache while sleeping and when waking, nausea, sometimes vomiting. The pediatrician picked up on these classic symptoms and referred me to probably the best pediatric neurosurgeon in Louisville probably Kentucky. She seemed normal other than that before the surgery but as Dr. Moriarity showed me she was showing signs of water on the brain due to increasing pressure in the brain, the tumor also was interfering with fluid draining into the spinal canal so was life threatening, we walked from his office to the icu at Kosair and Emily thought she was just tagging along she kept saying, can I come too? She had about 2 months of symptoms and the doctor told me most cases are diagnosed after three so we had about a month head start.

All our prayers were answered and God has given Emily a chance to grow up. Don and I were devastated on Monday, but Wednesday morning we had strength to face this situation and be there for Emily. I believe this was prayers, from all over. I have received “Cheer cards” from the nurse’s station from Alaska, to Georgia, Texas and other states. We are humbled by vast prayer response and know that God provided the best opportunities to Emily from early diagnosis, best circumstances for the removal, not near untouchable brain structures, great hospital and good nurses. Lonny, if you would, send to everyone on the list.
