SoCal Phone Rate Increases

I’m posting this here because it’s California specific. Did anybody notice Verizon’s rate hikes over the last few months? In the copper arena the $39/mo unlimited long distance Freedom Essentials plan that they sold me in November went up 25% to $49/mo in December. Back to VOIP for me.

I don’t text, but while discussing the issue (before they hung up on me the 2nd time) I learned that in March Verizon Wireless raised the price for text messages by 50% to 15 cents for each messages sent or received. Something that parents of teens need to be aware of.

They'll get real aware of it when the bills for the little chatterboxes come in. My opinion on teens with cellphones and texting and all that other crapola is: It ain't your birthright, child.

interesting. i wonder how that got past franchise agreements... did we institute state wide franchise agreements while i wasn't looking?

it really doesn't pay to have anything more than a cell phone, except for those few times every 5 years or so when you need to dial up for internet access.

anyone here using time warner for VOIP?

How reliable is VOIP anyway? If the internet connection goes down are you without a phone?

I like the price, and the technology is definitely interesting, but its a little scary knowing your phone might not work when you need it most.

I used to have to make a ton of long distance calls to family. The way it broke down for me was $15/mo for a metered land line (required for DSL) plus $25 for VOIP or $40/mo plus taxes. Verizon sold me on switching by promising a flat $39 rate with unlimited long distance, and then raised the rates the following month.

In my experience my VOIP provider was about as reliable as a cell phone (99%ish) as long as there was power. No power = no internet = no phone. This didn't bother me because I had a cell phone as well. What did suck was support. My non-existant command of Hindi was't much worse than their English.

I agree with Jig. I only have a land line because I need it for DSL, other wise I'd be 100% cell. But I'm in good health. Anybody with health issues needs a conventional landline for the best 911 service.

Our setup is pretty much 100% cell. We have VOIP through Cox cable only for 911 calls. All of our calls are made via cell. If for some reason the house phone should ring we just don't answer it. My GF's parents are 50/50 between cell and VOIP via Time Warner or Adelphia.

We never give out the house number for any reason.

Vonage @ $14/month ($17 w/fees/taxes) works just fine for me. I had the unlimmited plan for over a year, and then I finally looked at my usage, I only went over 500 minutes once, so I switched to the cheaper plan...

Yes, a few months back it passed.

I use Vonage (plan to continue to use them for as long as possible). Same here, $17/mo with every feature imaginable. I do have cox as my internet provider, so service has been outstanding.

Im on life line and freedom plus, so my bill went from $38.99 to $42.00....Considering the number of phone calls my Niece makes to her mom (My sister)(6 times daily)(to Fresno) and the number of calls I make to West Virgina, Mass, Alaska and Arizona and the State Capital for conferring on rent control bills and other bills, our phone bill would rise dramatically if we switched to Voip,

Hunh? Vonage: $24.99/mo unlimited including long distance. It'd cut your bill nearly in half.

I think you mean that if you switched, your bill would be reduced dramatically...

Yeah, but what happens when charter goes down, like it did on Sunday for 6 hours....Does that mean the phone would be down at the same time?

My VOIP provider is Sunrocket and I have nothing but good things to say about them. $24.95 US and Canada and some free International was my reason. Oh yea Verizon charging 2.00 mo if you dont make any LD calls. Dang it's warm today (NOT)
