The press has almost never done what you claim they should do. From the earliest days of "yellow journalism", the press has always been nothing but a platform for advertisers and political parties. When they report the "truth", it is merely an accident.
This is an interesting program that examines the issue:

It has some "political" context but I would suspect that there is enough blame to go around regardless of party...

Four hours, but it delves quite deeply into the reasons for the current situation.
