Re: Problem with Automatic Update since Tuesday

THANKS La Luna, and All!

You were right, the first patch did not work for my wife's computer.... the 'revised' patch did work in about a minute.
It's installing now.... I will direct a post I made in Microsoft forum to here!

Thanks very much -- I thought it might be a bug in some beta software I'm testing... I'll forward that, too!!! !

By the way, the system that has the problem has Office 2003.
The system that was OK, had Office 2000.

When I try to download; »download.windowsupdate.com/v7/wi···-x86.exe it starts downloading but hangs at about 1.6 MB of the 5.6 MB file. It just all of a sudden hangs. I've tried downloading in FireFox 2.0.0.3, IE 7.0.5730.11 and Opera 9.20

I don't know what else to do.
I have already installed v3 of 927891 and WindowsUpdate is still hanging up.

Thanks for any input,

KC

After installing new two packages and several reboots running "Custom" check took 3:30 min, wich is better than previous 17 min.

What I did:
1. Uninstall v2 of 927891, reboot.
2. Install v3 of 927891, reboot.
3. Install UpdateAgent v3.0, reboot.
4. Check and install latest updates, reboot.

It's better now. Thank you rdhw See Profile for the links and advice to re-install 927891 fix.

It may be the best that can be done for now, who knows. Real improvement may bring only a new SP3 package though. In this case we will not need to check / download / install more then hundred(!) latest updates (since SP2).

When it will finally come to us, bringing to the end this obvious absurd of downloading so many hotfixes separately?
I did the fix and it seems to have worked!

Good!
It's better be working now, when the problem gets more and more publicity

This was just a single XP laptop and it worked. I will reserve judgment until I hear it works for 2003 servers, although prudent administrators will do patches manually.

I haven't updated our XPHomesp2 computer yet but I have two questions:

Since I don't have Office installed on the computer, is it safe to assume I won't experience the problems mentioned at Microsoft Updates?

And, in case I do have problems and have to install the two patches, I saw these instructions in case the new agent won't install:

"If the first of these produces an error message about "Update agent already installed", then execute the installer again manually, with parameter /wuforce as in:

WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe /wuforce"

I don't know how to manually execute the installer with the /wuforce parameter. Could someone please explain to me how to do this. (In case I would need the path, I normally would download an update to C:\Security\Jan 07 Updates)

I'm assuming that if I have no problems at Microsoft Updates I don't have to install the new UpdateAgent, but would still like the instructions on how to force the installer.

Thank you very much.

Sincerely, Libra

Hello, Libra!

Go to the 'Run' box, browse to where you have WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe stored, select it, then add the '(space)/wuforce' command in the Run box, then hit OK.

and if I could seek clarification after trying to digest this plumb thread...
(1.) People configured for WindowsUpdate only aren't experiencing the original freeze up "problem?" Right or wrong?
(2.) Are all people configured for MICROSOFT UPDATES experiencing "the problem?"
(3.) Is it only individuals on MICROSOFT UPDATES who also have MS Office installed that experience "the problem?"
I'm on Windows XP SP2 configured for WindowsUpdate
Thanks.

That is correct. You only need to do this IF you are experiencing the problem.

Just be aware that it seems to suddenly start happening out of the blue when it's never happened before. I've been reading about this for a while, but I never had the issue until I tried to get the last round of monthly updates.

Answer for #2 is No, there are many who do not have the issue, less than 10% for certain.
Slashman very early in the thread mentioned 4 out of 50 PCs in his office were having the issue. I have had MU ever since it was available and this was the first time I had issues.

Much obliged. I may tinker with the other machine in the room for it's obviously in trouble while doing manual updates on the WU site. I see 100% CPU utilization for extended moments of a Svchost.exe module. The process is visibly labored. I see no such behavior on my system.

Correct.

No, only a minority experience the problem. The first reports of this problem were from a year ago, but the numbers of those affected are increasing slowly. The May updates seem to have triggered a new set of sufferers.
(3.) Is it only individuals on MICROSOFT UPDATES who also have MS Office installed that experience "the problem?"
There seems to be some evidence that only MU users who have Office 2003 installed are suffering. Office XP or 2007 are not having as much trouble.

Appreciate the help from this thread. I have 4 desktops and 4 laptops at home (4 kids). One laptop and one desktop are seriously impacted by this situation (one XP Home and one XP Pro - both have Office 2003).

I have been fighting the problem on the laptop for over 6 months. I've reinstalled Windows XP twice and it reoccurred both times. I couldn't figure it out until the hard drive on the desktop died and I had to reinstall Windows again. During the install process, Windows Update worked fine until I upgraded to MS Update after I installed Office 2003. Then the computer slowed to a crawl and svchost ran at 100% for over 5 minutes.

Changed the laptop and desktop to Windows Update and they work fine. I'm going to be manually checking for Office Updates until I'm sure Microsoft has a solid fix.

I don't know about everyone's experience but 25% of my computers experienced this problem.

Thank you Argle and LaLuna for the instructions and extra information about this. I appreciate it very much.

I just went to Microsoft Updates and had no problems, but I want to mention that instead of getting the screen to pick Express or Custom, I got a notice "Update Windows to work with this website. To continue you must install the latest version of some Windows updating software designed to work with this site" (I was a little suspicious if they were going to try to install the WGA notification, but I know you have to agree to the eula, so I clicked to install the software). It downloaded and installed the software and then the screen came up to select Express or Custom. It all went well.

Thank you again.

Sincerely, Libra

I think I read they were going to push this fix out, so maybe that's what you got.
