| Where to draw the line on drops?
Alright, this is both a praise to AT&T and a question topic - but need to share my story first.
I've recently had serious intermittent issues with my DSL dropping out (resyncing) several times a day. We are talking 20+ times a day. It got so bad last Friday that I was forced to call helpdesk yet again (this was the third time they sent someone). I couldn't even get it to sync up while they were on the phone.
So anyway, the tech comes out (pleasant, professional, but unsuccessful in the past in solving the problem), and really switches things up. He gave us a Netopia modem/router, got our line profile changed off MaxSync/noise profile, and swapped out the cable pairs on our two lines to see if that would make a difference. It definitely has, and I'm glad it did - I was ready to drop them if I didn't see an improvement. Now it is staying up on average all day, and even had it stay in sync for 50+ hours the last couple of days.
I have still, however, seen a few random drops on the log. For example, there were 3 in a row (over a period of about 15 minutes) earlier this morning, and another one yesterday evening (about 8 hours difference between these two events). My question is, where should I draw the line on these dropouts before calling support again? I'm ok with how it is now as long as it doesn't drop a lot while I'm using it, but how often does a "normal" DSL line drop and resync like this?
Sorry if this sounds a bit pessimistic - I'm very pleased that it has improved this much - being able to be on for hours at a time and not have problems is virtually new to me. |

Think you could post us some stats? |

| Hmm... I wasn't really planning on messing with it anymore...believe me, it's WAY better now than it was. If you insist however:
Line State Up Modulation DMT Data Path Fast
Downstream Upstream Max Allowed Speed (kbps) 3552 384 SN Margin (dB) 19.50 12.00 Line Attenuation (dB) 35.50 21.00 CRC Errors 26 1
Modem/Router is a Netopia 2241N-VGx
The CRC Errors seem to constantly keep rising as the hours go by. I see upwards of 3000 after about 24 hours. I'm guessing that has something to do with what's still causing the drops. The problem is, though the line may be intermittent, it doesn't look like it most of the time. Even more so now, it's losing sync much less frequently than it was.
TechBob, there are no major repairs going on where we are. |
