Blury Eyes

No, not in a photo. I have noticed that after looking through the viewfinder for a minute or so, I have a hard time focusing my eyes afterwards. Do others have this problem? Is there a way to avoid, or prevent it?

Standard viewfinder? You may need diopters...

.

Have you adjusted the compensation diopter correctly?

That generally is what cause that. Your eye strains to adjust to an incorrect setting and then has to refocus when you change your view point.

The diopter correction should be made so as to not have your eye strain to focus on the view finder. If your camera does not have a diopter adjustment either visit an eye doctor for a diopter lens to wear or a drug store to try different over the counter reading glasses until you find one that works for you. They are rated in Diopters from 1 to 4 diopters in increments of .25

It is a standard SLR TTL (Pentax K100D). The diopler focus is fine. I do wear glasses. Dont know if that makes a difference. I know I can not get the diopler to focus without my glasses.

Hmmm...Maybe I wasent so clear. The problem is not when I look through the viewfinder. I can see clearly through the viewfinder. It is afterwards when I try to focus both eyes. My one eye (the one I use in the viewfinder) dosent want to focus correctly for a minute or two.

I knew what you meant and it still is a problem with your diopter setting that does that to your vision and focus.

Same thing happens when binoculars diopters are not adjusted properly as well.

You may have to see your optometrist to get a proper diopter lens to wear.

Cameras have a limited diopter adjustment and probably your needs exceed the cameras ability to adjust.

I don't have an answer but I'd like to hear one as I've experienced the same problem for a very long time now and it's very distracting and disturbing. A few things that I've found that helped was having the diopter focused perfectly. But the thing that helped me most was adding an aftermarket eyecup. I actually have two, one shaped in a way to cover your whole eye and the other a little smaller but still blocks out most of the light.
I seems to me that light entering around the eye was causing most of my problems and adding the eyecup helped a great deal, but I still have a lot of trouble focusing after I'm finished looking through the viewfinder. My eyes have been really giving me fits for the past year now was why I never posted about this before. I thought it was only a problem "I" was experiencing since no one else had ever mentioned anything about it.

I will be headed to the Vets Hospital in RI this week for an appointment and when there I will ask the Eye Docs there what they think. They are sharp instructors from URI med school I have a good relationship with them so I will have some sort of opinion to post.

This sounds like a strange problem.

I can actually hold a camera vertical and focus through both open eyes (one through the viewfinder and the other in the open). I can see the action happening and what is going on through my camera.

.

The problem also occurs when you need or just start to need reading glasses looking at a book for awhile and then look up and your eyes have to take a bit to refocus.

The elasticity of your eye's lens decreases with age and the more it has to compensate for things like reading or camera eye pieces the longer it takes to recover or adjust and the result is the short out of focus events.

Reading glasses and camera diopter reduce the amount of adjustment you eye needs to do and reduces or eliminates the focus shifting problems by cutting down on the amount of compensation your eyes need to do.

Shooting with glasses on is not fun and I'm not surprised it doesn't agree with you. Your eye has the most relief when it's up against the eyecup, not away from it. Luckily, there are/were accessories out there for this problem:

B&H has a +3 diopter »www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/4···r_M.html
Pentax's own store has a -4 diopter »https://pc-wweb.pentax.com/scripts/wgate···rget=yes
(the Pentax store might not actually have it available though)

Anyway, I'm not sure what correction you actually need but one or the other should put you in range, I think.

Thanks for all the replies. I do have bifocals (my eyes got old no matter how immature I act). When I look through the viewfinder, I can not get it to focus without my glasses. I can get the focus with my glasses on if I adjust the viewfinder.

So if I get the right add on, I can see without my glasses? I wonder if the eye doctor can tell me what adjustment I need.

Yes he can it should be around the same diopter as your reading glasses maybe a bit more because the image from the view finder is so very close.

Computer glasses are weaker than reading glasses because the image is further away. The closer to the eye the image is the stronger the diopter has to be.

My glasses for the computer are a diopter of 1.25 the reading glasses are 2.50 and my view finder's diopter is just about max somewhere about a diopter of 3.

Right. Don't close the other eye. Just keep it open and concentrate on what you see in the viewfinder.

What they said about leaving both eyes open. I was taught that years ago in competitive rifle shooting. It is surprising how fast one can learn to do it and it does greatly reduce eye strain.

I am finding with the K100D that it is just as easy for me to leave the glasses on. I can remove them, set the diopter, but it is a pain to then put the glasses back on afterwards to see what I just took.

Good luck.

I do this while shooting baseball so I can see when the pitcher is throwing without having to follow the pitch with my camera

I agree. I have this problem when I shoot alot of pics. Keeping both eyes open when shooting pictures and rifles, helps more than anything else will.
