Price?

So for twice, or more, the price of a theater ticket, which entitles me to a huge screen and a nice surround sound system, I can watch it on my relatively small TV with four speakers doing stereo. The movie theaters should just ignore it and let it die on it's own.

I guess if you go by yourself(who does that?) then it's expensive but compare it to going with 3-4 people and it's about the same price. The only thing good about the theatre is the sound can be cranked up without your neighbours bitching. Film in the theatres is always dirty and shaky.

I agree Maxo, and yabos, it all depends on the theater you go to

I think it could also depend on the movie. I bet for major released like Spider Man, Lord of the Rings, or Star Wars, this could have drawn a large market. Go to a buddies house with a nice system and chip in $5, plus chips and drinks (reasonably priced) it could be worth it.

This would be a fantastic deal. It costs me $100 to take my family out to the theater *and* I have to deal with all the idiots yapping the movie away around me. The chance to cut my movie night cost in half and enjoy it on my home theater system? Where do I sign up??

Of course, your financial comparison only applies if it was "only you" going to the theater. If it was at least two or maybe more if a family is going, then your savings going to the theater disappear.

I love to go to the movies by myself.

Personally, I view it as a time to see something I really wanted to see and get into and not have to socialize with someone else while it's playing.

The ONLY time I go is during the week for an early afternoon matinee because generally, just a few of us have the whole theater to ourselves as well. Not to mention it costs less as well.

And, I agree with the poster above who say's you'll never get the same experience at home.

Although I have an awesome video setup at home..(samsung HDTV and 5 speaker Bose 901 audio)..it's just not the same as the movie theater experience.

The popcorn tastes better..the atmosphere is in place..
the size of the theater..bigger..and during the day..it's all ours.

I've gone to the movies alone many times as well. Most people see it as being a loser, but I don't put much stock in other people's judgements.
Since you can't exactly hold a conversation during a movie it's not exactly a social experience. So if the movie's good enough and nobody else is down I'm game for a solo viewing.

Sorry if your TV and sound system sucks. See $8 for a ticket, at least another $8 for popcorn and a coke. Not to mention gas. Get at least 3 people to go in on this and it's actually cheaper than the movies and none of the hassels. My friend has a nice 65 in widscreen HDTV that pretty much gives you the theater feel. Except you don't have to put up with noisy people and the bathrooms are cleaner.

Let's see... When it's just me and the wife going to the theatres, two tickets cost $20. If she wants candy and a drink (she always does) and I want a bottle of water, it's another $20. Now, just for fun, lets throw in the cost of getting to and from the theatre. And, depending on where your theatre is, the cost of parking, too..

At $30, same-day streaming would be cheaper than going to the theatre. At $40, you'd be breaking even. Now, make it a movie night with friends and any price in that $30-$40 range is a freaking bargain.

Something like this would be a nightmare for theatres - particularly given that almost all of their real income comes from concessions and not the movie tickets.

Here's how you too can have movie-theatre quality popcorn at home:

•pop favorite brand of popcorn (something generic/cheap is recommended)
•place popped kernels in an clear-plastic garbage bag
•allow to sit for three days until slightly stale
•cover with a cheap brand of light-weight motor oil
•salt to taste

There is also the consideration of the equipment. I have always considered the price of the movie theater to be the premium for getting a really large screen and nice sound. Even the nicest home systems I have seen cannot match that.
And if you make it IMAX (same price as regular theaters in Tallahassee) then you really just can't beet the quality.
I also never buy popcorn or sodas at a movie theater out of revolt for the wallet-raping. One box of popcorn pays for the cost of the kernels the theater will use all day long.

Sorry your TV and surround system sucks. I prefer mine to any movie theatre I've been too. Since I live in a Single family home, I don't have to worry about neighbors. I think $30's is kind of steep, but would be willing to pay $10-$15 to see the movie at home several weeks after release.

$30's would still be cheaper for me anyway, especially if you count cost of babysitter.

I'm with ya all the way - my home theater is good enough that I prefer watching movies at home. A recent trip to the theater while on a business trip just reinforced my opinion.

comcast is dreaming if they think people are going to pay $30-50 to watch a first run movie in their own home. I would be willing to pay $15.

I'll take a 65-foot screen over a 65-inch screen any day.

I've yet to see anything for home use that looks like a theater (well how can it, there's no way to buy something with the same resolution as 70mm film projection) unless you're talking about some insane private screening room. But most people don't have that.

Hang out over in AVSForums in their Home Theater construction form and you will see some amazing home theaters. Some are actually relatively affordable to the commoner, some are worth more then my $100k house.

The theater near me, and that's 20 miles, maybe has 40 foot wide screen in the "big" theater. In the other 4 they're maybe about 25. Most home theater sound systems sound better than the sound system at the theater near me.
