What would I do without the "magic" of 8$ popcorn in my life?
Well, at the cost of $30 or more per movie, you might as well go out and get your $8 popcorn.
Correct. If you aren't spending money one place you are spending it in another. Lets say it costs $40 to watch it at home in this example.

If you go to the theater, you are spending $12 a ticket to watch Spiderman 3 in the Imax. Then you have a combo large popcorn and 2 pops for $10. Thats $34 right there. Then you have gas to and from the theater plus time in line and the drive there. The advantage is that you get to see it in the Imax, and no screen at home can capture the magic like that. Nor the sound system for that matter.

The dark horse is the crowd. Even watching Spiderman 3 in the Imax, there were no issues with talking or cell phone yapping. I have had issues with that in the past, but those are very rare. When I do hit a problem like that, a simple conversation with the manager gets me a couple free movie passes OR a nice well written letter does the same thing.

Really, there is no savings other than the convenience factor. Would this be popular? Who knows.

most of the imax screens are just slightly larger than average movie screens.

Real imax is totally different than what they offer at these movie houses

Just slightly larger?
Imax movie size: 72.6 x 52.8 ft
I did a search on movie theater screen sizes and they are a little more than 1/2 of the Imax size, but they vary from one theater to another.

I think that 40% bigger is more than just slightly larger.

Most people do not live near an Imax theater. I have to drive 20 miles just to go to a regular theater. The nearest one is 100 miles away and there are 3 Imax theaters in my whole state. Hell even a state like Florida which is the 4th largest in the USA only has 9.
