New FAP 24 hour refil....starting when?

Okay, I get that they ditched the 50kbps recovery rate for this new 24 hour thing. Is it purely based on time? Or is there still a bucket refil rate that typically takes 24 hours to fill the bucket? See, since 5AM this morning I downloaded 311MB not knowing then new FAP policy till now. I guess my main question is; is there a set time that FAPs reset (6AM to 6AM, per say) Or does the 24 hour tick start when you start downloading from a fresh bucket? Say at max 375 at 8AM, download 5MB file, replenish doesn't happen till next day at 8AM? If this is the case, I think I'll be waiting till WildBlue accepts new customers; FAP per month seems more managable than FAP per DAY.

Sorry, just saw the new FAP discussion. Looks like no one figured it out. Either way, no need to respond I'll just read through that.

Judging from actual experience of one who never got Fap'd until the new FAP, I'd argue the refill is a time based thing that starts from last usage. If you use your internet, the thing just keeps grinding your face in the gravel until you can't take it anymore. I'm sure the computer is the one in charge, which means not a bit of leadway in any direction.

Well I got hit with the wonderful FAP the other day and what it did for me is basically reset after 24 hrs. I had to go from the time I was FAP'ed back 24hrs to figure out the amount I DL'ed. Now infact I did go over my limit as I didn't know how the new policy really worked. After about 24hrs I was able to browse again at full speed but during the FAP period I was doing less then dial up speeds no matter how long I let my net sit. Basically it seems as if there is no real refill, you just get to wait 24hrs from the start of the FAP period.

Personally I think this new policy is worse then the old. Sure they gave everyone an extra 25mb but now that is all within a 24hr period where as before you could use it in say 4-5 hrs and still be safe. Also the idea that we have to wait 24hrs or close to before getting full speed again is simply wrong. Most files now adays are very large no mater what. Virus updates, windows updates, softwarer updates are all large files and we should not have to wait a full week just to get them all because of a FAP. We all pay a pretty penny for this service that has many problems and this is just another way to put more money into there pockets and more out of ours. Pretty sad that a company can do this to people just because we have no other option other then dial-up. My question is how far are we going to let them push us before we do something that really makes an impact?

Ok sorry for ranting on but this company just gets under my skin.

I have 2 computers running with auto updates for windows, IE, Symantec virus, Windows Defender, Windows media player, Adobe Reader, etc. I have never been FAPed yet. Most updates are not that large. Youtube video's eat up your bucket if you are looking at them.

I think it is very safe to say that HughesNet is more than willing to lose customers who use the service enough to reach FAP very often. They are looking for low to moderate users and are signing up enough customers each month to be a bit "picky" I think. Time will tell if this strategy works out or not, if that is what they are actually trying to do right now.

So would I theoretically be able to download ~600 MB files in one going if I were to start the download near the end of the 24hr period?

If my experience is common, I would say no, not necessarily... I had one sequence where when I came out of FAP, I apparently had a reduced recovery rate (about 15MB/hr) and FAPt after about 9hrs and 500MB DL.

Be careful after coming out of FAP. It appears they might have a system to penalize users who haven't learned their lesson...

If you try what you are suggesting, keep the DL rate relatively low and steady through the whole period.

I dont think so, but i could be wrong. I was downloading an update to windows xp 64. I started downloading at approx 1PM and was FAP'd. I was subject to FAP for 24+ hours from the time I exceeded the FAP limit. I didnt notice any improvement in speeds for about 26 hours.

How would Hughes get the message across in their advertising that would basically tell new customers that it was not intended for mega download, but rather for basic surfing and email?

Eliminating any references to "Unlimited Usage" might help.
People going from cable to satellite have no idea that it will limit them as never before.
It will be a real ad mans challenger to make it understood.
Unless this is merely a holding action until they can get more satellites operating. I know they do not want to lose too many customers.

It's seeming to me as if nobody really knows. If they are going to make such drastic changes in their policy, HughesNet should, at the very least, make some documentation available that describes it thoroughly. It must be easier to screw over customers when you keep them in the dark.
