BOT: When we lived in Petaluma, we always went to Santa Rosa. The nice thing about this area is there are lots of theaters in/near strip malls. Not too many strip malls around here that doesn't have a dollar store. Besides, the kids love to make it into a big ordeal to visit the dollar store, load up on sweets/pop and sneak it into the show :o. AMC just purchased a chain of theaters from Star theaters around here so they pretty much have the largest layout of places to go. Ticket prices didn't change so we normally go when it's cheaper or we have a free coupon. OT Are you in the Coast Guard? I'm over near the Coast Guard Station in Fort Bragg somewhat often, we have a station in Ukiah as well (air).

The theater near me, and that's 20 miles, maybe has 40 foot wide screen in the "big" theater. In the other 4 they're maybe about 25. Even the nicest home systems I have seen cannot match that.
Hang out over in AVSForums in their Home Theater construction form and you will see some amazing home theaters. Some are actually relatively affordable to the commoner, some are worth more then my $100k house.

I've gone to the movies alone many times as well. Most people see it as being a loser, but I don't put much stock in other people's judgements.
Since you can't exactly hold a conversation during a movie it's not exactly a social experience. So if the movie's good enough and nobody else is down I'm game for a solo viewing.

The ONLY time I go is during the week for an early afternoon matinee because generally, just a few of us have the whole theater to ourselves as well. Not to mention it costs less as well.

And, I agree with the poster above who say's you'll never get the same experience at home.

Although I have an awesome video setup at home..(samsung HDTV and 5 speaker Bose 901 audio)..it's just not the same as the movie theater experience.

The popcorn tastes better..the atmosphere is in place..
the size of the theater..bigger..and during the day..it's all ours. :)

Of course, your financial comparison only applies if it was "only you" going to the theater. If it was at least two or maybe more if a family is going, then your savings going to the theater disappear.
