tc1uscg : Retired after 20 a few years ago. Lived in Petaluma (Two Rock Station). Never made it too far up north but went as far as where 101 went from 4 lanes to 2.. Was just out for a drive. We loved it out there (the 4.5 years we lived there).

BOT: When we lived in Petaluma, we always went to Santa Rosa. The nice thing about this area is there are lots of theaters in/near strip malls. Not too many strip malls around here that doesn't have a dollar store. Besides, the kids love to make it into a big ordeal to visit the dollar store, load up on sweets/pop and sneak it into the show :o. AMC just purchased a chain of theaters from Star theaters around here so they pretty much have the largest layout of places to go. Ticket prices didn't change so we normally go when it's cheaper or we have a free coupon. Hey, I got 5 in my party so I rather go out to eat and spend the same amount for a good meal then go to the movies. :D

In fact, most DECENT home theater systems rival even the best theaters -- and the fact that you don't have to deal with people who won't STFU the entire movie (the kind of people I usually end up winging an entire handful of Skittles at after telling them to be quiet three times) and even you can understand why movie theaters are going under.

EDIT: In fact, as a former movie theater employee, I can tell you that the main problem is the fact that most modern day "parents" think the movie theater is their own personal babysitter. Unfortunately for the rest of us, they neglected to teach their kids proper movie theater etiquette and manners (read: STFU).

It costs me $100 to take my family out to the theater *and* I have to deal with all the idiots yapping the movie away around me. The chance to cut my movie night cost in half and enjoy it on my home theater system? Where do I sign up??
--
Interested in open source engine management for your Subaru?

Maxo : I think it could also depend on the movie. I bet for major released like Spider Man, Lord of the Rings, or Star Wars, this could have drawn a large market. Go to a buddies house with a nice system and chip in $5, plus chips and drinks (reasonably priced) it could be worth it.

yabos : I guess if you go by yourself(who does that?) then it's expensive but compare it to going with 3-4 people and it's about the same price. The only thing good about the theatre is the sound can be cranked up without your neighbours bitching. Film in the theatres is always dirty and shaky.

Maxo : So for twice, or more, the price of a theater ticket, which entitles me to a huge screen and a nice surround sound system, I can watch it on my relatively small TV with four speakers doing stereo. The movie theaters should just ignore it and let it die on it's own.
